I'm currently listing a large number of playbills from out-of-town tryouts prior to the Broadway runs. Many are from early performances when revisions were common and include song titles that were cut before opening in New York. (See cut songs below) ........ This is a rare April 24th, 1950 "Playgoer" playbill from the Pre-Broadway tryout of the ALFRED DRAKE, EDWARD EAGER and JOHN MUNDY musical flop "THE LIAR" at the Forrest Theatre in Philadelphia. (The production would open May 18th, 1950 at the Broadhurst Theatre in New York City and close after only 12 performances.) ..... The musical starred MELVILLE COOPER, PAULA LAURENCE, PHILIP COOLIDGE, JOSHUA SHELLEY, DENNIS HARRISON, GLENN BURRIS, RUSSELL COLLINS and STANLEY CARLSON and the cast included WALTER MATTHAU, ROBERT PENN, MARTIN BALSAM, BARBARA ASHLEY, BARBARA MOSER, KAREN LINDGREN and JEAN HANDZLIK ..... CREDITS: Music by JOHN MUNDY; Book by ALFRED DRAKE and EDWARD EAGER based on "The Liar" by CARLO GOLDONI; Lyrics by EDWARD EAGER; Sets designed by DONALD OENSLAGER Costumes designed by MOTLEY; Choreographed by HANYA HOLM; Directed by NORRIS HOUGHTON; Produced by DOROTHY WILLARD and THOMAS HAMMOND ..... The eight page playbill measures 6" X 9" inches and includes full production credits, cast list, synopsis of scenes and list of musical numbers, but no cast photos or bios ..... CUT SONGS: The list of musical numbers includes "Beatrice! Cleonice!", "Drink, Drink, Drink" and "Funeral March" which were cut out-of-town ..... CONDITION: With the exception of moderate creasing from normal handling, this rare playbill is in excellent condition and will make a wonderful addition to the collection of any musical theatre aficionado or historian .....
