Helvetia was a tradename registered by Omega but, was also a tradename used by the General Watch Company, a company originally started by the Brandt Brothers of Omega in Bienne, Faucon 18, Switzerland. From the many watches found and general history available, it appears that they were in business from at least 1885. The company was still going in the 1950’s when they were supplying movements to Elgin in Mexico and was still listed in the 1970's.
Aviator’s Timepieces of the Twenties
Due to the prohibition of military aviation there were no official military aircraft clocks or aviation watches. However, there were many pilot’s watches in 1920’s and 30’s Germany that surely were used by the Luftwaffe. Most had wide lugs, occasionally with snap on or screwed backs. Such watches were officially distributed to, and worn by pilots in the Luftwaffe. Pilot’s wristwatches were also produced by renowned Swiss clock makers such as Omega, Longines and Zenith. They were also manufactured by IWC, with their 83-caliber model (sometimes named Mark 9 in anticipation of the later Mark 11) in steel, but also in a non-authentic chromed case.
