ALBUM DESCRIPTION

Mention is back with "Return to Bass", courtesy of forerunning Gospel Reggae producer Mark Giles (A.K.A. Jah Servant). This is unquestionably the best production that both have recorded to date. Not enough good can be said about this brilliant lyricist/deejay and producer combination. In my opinion, this is unquestionably THE standout album of the season and one of the best of the year. It is 16 tracks of unadulterated roots and culture and the undiluted word of God.

From the first sentence it is evident that mention is far more than a singer or a deejay, he is a clever wordsmith. Just check out these lyrics; "We are not miniSTARS or superSTARS, we are warriors defenders of the truth... saving souls of the youth." And later he proclaims (with tongue in cheek); "Them say we (are) doing it for the dollar and that we only want to be a superstar. But still I can't pay my rent and I'm driving a Corolla, singing all over for bread and sweet water, but still I remain faithful to my Father."

On "God Ah God" Mention attacks the microphone with an admirable fervor and a spitfire pentameter reminiscent of Gitta Dan. This is Bob Marley style Christian reggae using all live instruments courtesy of his own band B.A.S.S (hence the album title "Return to Bass).

On "Many Roads" and "Always", Mention puts on his singing hat with his own unique flare. I love the infectious hook on track four encouraging us that "God's always there." This is an upbeat rockers jam with rapid fire side stick stabs and clever lyrics; "Why wallow in your sorrow, hey don't your know that you are worth more than the sparrow?"

The pace picks up and the positive vibes continue with "Joy", a danceworthy ska track that will have you skankin' along in no time. Track six (Be Strong) features the hottest new voice in gospel reggae, St. Lucia's Emrand Henry. Over a militant cuica infused steppers riddim with a touch of dub, the two empower the ranks in the name of Jesus!

It is a blessing that the lyrics are included in the CD booklet, for "Nah Betray" contains some of the most profound lyrics on the album. This is an anthem, and its lyrics should be read carefully and lived by! I applaud Mention's unashamed approach, making this one of the most powerful cut on the album.

With a whopping 16 tracks, there are far too many tunes to give you a song-by-song description. Other standout cuts include the fiery "Judgment", the percolating "Don't live" and the soca styled "Shine". There are also a few noteworthy guest appearances on the album such as Terrence Baynes on "I Just Want", Iantha Hicks on "Clap Yuh Hands" and Vanessa Briggs on the meditative nyabinghi "I Wanna Worship"

This time Mention holds no punches and hits us harder than ever. Playing to his strengths, he delivers eloquent deejay/singjay style vocals over militant yet organic roots riddims courtesy of B.A.S.S. and esteemed producer Jah Servant. With so many albums to choose from these days, you may ask what separates this CD from all others currently available? Consistency. Mention is who he is, and he clearly refuses to be anything different. In one song he boldly proclaims, "My song is a sermon." That is a great description of this album as a whole. Mention refuses to stray from the path that God has set before him. This is strictly roots and culture straight from the Word of God. Buy this album today!
