ITEM DESCRIPTION: I have 3 of these at listing. Picture is representative, but they all look very similar. 5-1/2 X 4-1/2 inch glassed display of stingray development. These egg cases are called a Mermaid's Purse or Devil's Purse. They are common to Stingrays, Electric Rays, Skates, and some Sharks. This is a very unusual display. One side of the egg case has been trimmed away and shows a small, fetal ray. Next to it is a ray that's several days old and larger. These are dry, taxidermy preps - fixed through freeze-drying. This process is superior to traditional "skin and stuff" mounting - and the only way to prepare such a small, fragile specimen and retain details. Great specimens for school studies of embryology and development, fetal comparisons, ichthyology, museum exhibits or displays, or your own little side show.
