This is a very nice piece of the Iron meteorite from Namibia, Africa named Gibeon. This meteorite is made up of thousands of individual pieces and the total known weight is thousands of tons! If one this size comes in these days, tens of thousands could be killed by such an impact!
This piece weighs 59.53 grams and is a very nice etched sphere. It measures 25 mm in diameter. It has a fantastic etch. This piece should sell for more than $150.00. I will start it at a penny and see where it ends up at!
Nitric acid is used on the cut pieces to show the crystalline structure called the "Widmanstaaten pattern" which is only seen in iron meteorites. This is a great piece for any meteorite collection or a very nice first piece! Gibeon is really starting to get scarce as the strewnfield has now been picked clean! Prices are now double what they were last year and they will only continue rising! I am a meteorite dealer and fully gaurantee the authenticity of every meteorite and tektite specimen I sell!
Be sure to see me in the March 1999 issue of the Smithsonian Magazine, I am featured in an article about meteorite hunters.
