Mexican Single Tuberose
( Polianthes tuberosa )
Most popular late summer bloomer in southern gardens are the Mexican
single white Tuberose. They were domesticated by the Pre-Columbian
Indians, and were one of the first flowering plants taken back to Spain,
for cut flowers in the Spanish courtyard gardens.
Rated for Zones 8 and 9 for year round plantings, the Tuberose can be
successfully grown in lower zones, by removing the corm bulbs in late
fall and storing overwinter and setting out during the spring. Use as a
back drop planting in your landscape, plant in a sunny location, with
well drained soil. The 3' tall flower spikes are most abundant during the
summer.
Single white Tuberoses are grown for cut flower production for use in
Florist arrangements. Essential oil of the flowers is used in the perfume
industry. The highly fragrant Gardenia like scented blooms are loosely
arranged on spikes 3 to 4 feet in height, and open form the bottom to the
top of the spike which will take several weeks.
The corm/bulbs in this auction are growing in 4" pots,
the plant will be removed from the container, and shipped
partially bareroot, with the tops cut-off.
