These Mexican folk art pottery figurines, or "munecas" (dolls) were made by Jesus Aguilar, the son of the world famous Mexican folk artist, Josefina Aguilar, from the village of Ocotlan in the state of Oaxaca.
The figurines represent the legendary Mexican artists Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, and the figures are actually copied from a well-known 1931 self-portrait by Frida Kahlo.
Rivera, the muralist, and Kahlo, whose surrealistic art works have a near cult following, are undoubtedly the most famous Mexican artists in recent history. Pottery figurines made by the Aguilar family are included in museum collections, and they are highly collectible as well!
Diego is 8 1/16 tall and Frida is 6 3/4" tall. Both figures are signed by the artist. Diego's thumb is broken and there is a small chip on the back of Frida's skirt, which can be easily concealed with a little bit of green magic marker. Jesus Aguilar captured all the important details of this celebrated couple, including Frida's signature heavy eye brows and Diego's rather portly and imposing presence.
