Museum Quality Folk Art - 'Guaje' HandCrafted Folk Art From Temalacatzingo, Mexico

We are proud to introduce Museum and Top Quality folkart from Mexico - these are not the usual folkart that you can find around the country at souvenir shops.  These high-end and hand-made pieces are unique and displayed at Museums all over Mexico. Some of these pieces are now touring Internationally to exhibit the top of the line folkart craftsmen in Mexico are capable of producing.   In addition, some of them appear in books like 'Arte del Pueblo Manos de Dios' offered by the Popular Art Museum in Mexico.

Offered for sale is a dark 'burgundy' red and light pink 'Guaje' (calabash) that measures about 9.0 cm wide and 13.5 cm tall.  This 'Guaje' can be used as a jewelery box or as a collectible display item.  The high-quality on this piece can be seen from the colorful details in the colors and hand-engraving.  One of the few 'Guajes' that is signed by the artists from Temalacatzingo, Mexico - the city that specializes in producing lacquer folkart.  This item was picked from the top craftsman from Temalacatzingo.

Temalacatzingo, Guerrero, Mexico

Temalacatzingo is a Pre-Hispanic City in Guerrero, Mexico.  In Pre-Hispanic times, lacquer handcrafted items were used all over the country.  As of today, only 3 states offer these crafts: Guerrero, Chiapas and Michoacan.  In Guerrero, the cities offering these items are Temalacatzingo and Olinala.

The quality of these pieces is great and can be attested by the fact that some of them can be seen in the museum of Franz Mayer in Mexico City.   Recently, there was been strong interest from famous artists like Dr. Atl and personalities like Carlos Espejel, director of the Arts Museum and Popular Tradition - currently the Museum of Popular Art. 

The difficulty of producing these pieces is considered high.  The pieces are painted several times and need to be dry several days in advance of applying the last layer of lacquer in order to produce the final and perfect finish that the 'guaje' shows - the end result is a piece with live colors and pleasent smell.  You can distinguish the quality of the high-end guajes by the live colors it presents and the detailed engraving done.
