Mid-Century Modern ANNEMARIE DAVIDSON 4.25" Enamel & COPPER Abstract Checkered Orb Plate
Annemarie Davidson learned her enameling craft first from the great Doris Hall (1907-2001) in Cambridge, MA in 1957. In California she continued her studies with Curtis Tann. Her combination of geometric and organic form in her designs culminated in her most celebrated abstract designs, her Jewel line which features pieces of glass used to create free-form organic shapes which she calls Jewels. She also uses a sgraffito technique, incising straight lines from the center of her plate with the sharp point of a dart. Now in her 80s, she continues to produce work today.
This 4.25" plate, most likely from the 1961-1965 time period, is VERY unusual for its size. This plate features none of the usual jewels or grooveline of fadeline motifs, but rather a stylized and abstract image of a CHECKERED ORB!!! It incorporates fiery red and vibrant orange hues that cris-cross in a checkered pattern - set against a jet black background (NOTE: Depending on the color settings on your computer monitor, the red in this piece may appear to be orange, but rest assured and know that it IS actually RED!). It is a VERY UNUSUAL & RARE Annemarie Davidson piece.
The back of the plate is signed with her charcteristic AD interwined intiails and still retains her paper label which reads Annemarie Davidson handcrafted enamels Sierra Madre, California. It also retains the 3 original felt pad feet. Every UNIQUE piece was handcrafted by her alone, from start to finish. Excellent MINT condition - NO CRACKS, NO NICKS, NO CHIPS, NO CRAZING - PERFECT!!!
The work of Annemarie Davidson was included in the seminal exhibit titled Painting with Fire which opened in January of 2007 at the Long Beach Museum of Art. She was one of 30 enamelists included with a one page entry on her life and work. Her page is page 266 of the catalogue.
I am very hesitant to part with this RARE & STUNNING Mid-Century Modernist ANNEMARIE DAVIDSON Enamel & COPPER Plate, but alas, my loss is your gain!!! This plate previously belonged to my Grandfather who was a an avid and prolific collector of MUSEUM QUALITY Mid-Century Modern Collectibles. His Enormous accumulation of Art, Sculpture, and Antiquities is quite REMARKABLE - and we will be sharing some of the PRIME & CHOICE pieces, with you, right here on eBay!!!
