Up for auction is a small sized round woven splint ash and sweetgrass Indian basket with sweetgrass rims and weaves. But what makes this basket really stand out is the series of over a hundred tiny tight twists covering the sides and on the lid. This is a nicely woven little lidded basket made by a talented weaver named Marian Gauthier from the Mohawk tribe. The basket is a variation of the "strawberry basket" which is a hallmark of Mohawk weaving. The lid has a little loop handle made of ash. The basket comes with a tag with the word, "Mohawk" on one side, and Ms. Gauthier's initials on the other. No dye was used - the weaver wanted the finely crafted details to speak for themselves. A beautiful and well-made little Indian basket!
The basket, as noted, is a nice small size and finely woven. It measures 2" in diameter at the lid rim and 1½" deep to the top of its lid, with the handle adding another quarter inch or so. This beautiful basket is in pristine condition, with no breaks or any damage whatsoever. All of the twists, ash splints, and sweetgrass are in perfect shape. I have taken photos of all sides so you can see. This is an attractive, genuine, Native American basket and will make a terrific addition to someone's collection.
