A rare and highly prized tiny (about 1 1/4" high) Royal Doulton figural character jug or toby mug in the shape of "Sam Weller," D6147. Made in England. Designed by Leslie Harradine and Harry Fenton. One the "Original Twelve Tinies" made by Royal Doulton, commencing in 1947. The "tinies" ceased production in 1960. Sam Weller is wearing a dark brown hat, light brown coat and a red kerchief with white spots. In the 1837 Charles Dickens novel, "The Pickwick Papers," Sam Weller was a boots employed at the White Hart Inn. He became a faithful aide and valet to Mr. Pickwick and eventually married Napkin's housemaid. This character jug is unusual in that its modeling changes dramatically between the large and small versions. Sam has rich color and personality. Hand painted with a very steady hand. Superb sculptural detail on a very small scale. Has older Royal Doulton mark.
