Minton Slop Pail and
Liner, made 1906.
Laurel and Rose pattern.
11" tall overall. 13" wide
at handles. Central hole in liner is 2-5/8".
This large form is a slop
pail, also known as a slop jar. It would have been part of a
washing set which would include a pitcher and bowl, a sponge dish, a
soap dish, a toothbrush holder, candlesticks, and a lidded chamber pot.
The slop pail would have
been used to hold dirty water wrung from the sponge while washing.
This one came from a grand house owned by a major industrial family in
the Wilmington, Delaware area. It must not have been used for very
long before they got indoor plumbing, as the condition is nothing short
of remarkable.
There is a single glaze
skip measuring 3/16" at rim of liner. This is a factory flaw.
There is minor wear and loss to green enamel band at rim and around
knobs as shown.
Overall, this is a very
fine example of this large Minton form. The wicker handle that
would have attached to the knobs at the sides is not present.
Fully marked on base with
underglaze Minton backstamp, impressed "Minton's", and with other
impressed marks including the 6 within a circle that definitively dates
this to 1906.
