To our fellow collectors in this country and abroad, greetings and good wishes! This is the twelfth fully catalogued auction of perfume bottles produced by Monsen and Baer.

The Joy of Collecting Perfume Bottles follows upon the success of our previous books, beginning with The Beauty of Perfume in 1996 and following our 2001 book, The Magic of Perfume. As in all our previous books, we have tried to give our readers a valuable resource for perfume bottle collecting. Over the last twelve years, Monsen and Baer publications have given collectors dozens of valuable research articles on the history of perfume companies and glass makers, in addition to photos and descriptions of thousands of perfume bottles.

The Joy of Collecting Perfume Bottles offers collectors an astonishing array of perfume bottles and atomizers by the American companies DeVilbiss, Pyramid, and Volupt. There is definitely a magic quality to the elegant bottles made by DeVilbiss-their esthetics are quite different than most other perfume bottles. They are tall and sleek, and preciously fragile because of this. The collectors of DeVilbiss perfume bottles are passionate enough in their collecting that this quantity and quality of them is seldom seen for sale all at one time. Most of these are from a single owner, and they represent some of the rarest types of bottles that DeVilbiss made.

Our overall goal in publishing books on perfume bottles is to provide the collector with a resource for collecting and research that can be used over and over again, not only on the documentation of perfume bottles and their current value, but also on their history and their makers. The hardcover book format provides a durable object for collectors to use and reuse. Our goal here goes beyond merely selling perfume bottles, though of course we wish to do that and to do it well. In a very real sense, we want to produce for collectors something that we, as collectors ourselves, would value and find useful-something we would want to own and keep on our bookshelf. Our sincere wish is that other collectors use it, learn from it, and enjoy it. What we have said in the past bears repeating here: Knowledge-and the sharing of it-enhances the pleasure of collecting.
