PIECE: Calcedonia Lovers Sculpture ARTIST: Maestro Andrea Tagliapietra
You can see this piece in the center-left portion of the photo above. It was taken in the Murano Furnace/Gallery before being shipped to America. (please excuse the lack of quality in the photo)
This Calcedonia Lovers Sculpture was created and designed by Muranese Maestro Andrea Tagliapietra in 2006 using his skills as a glass artisan, that were passed down from his father, his father before him, his father before him, and on and on for the past eight generations.
This AMAZING piece is in MINT condition, and measures as follows:
Height: 11.0" Width: 4.0" Depth: 2.25" Weight: 4.0 lbs. Gallery: $2,950.00
This transparent base layered piece is dominated by an amazing, delicately placed, swirling Calcedonia band, which begins at the base and meanders circularly to the top. This piece depicts a Dancing Woman, swinging her arms gracefully in the air. The piece flows like that of a moving woman.
The beauty of Calcedonia glass is that each piece is different; and the exact flow of lines and color of Calcedonia cannot be duplicated. This piece has a transparent base, dominated by Calcedonia on one side.
What is Calcedonia Glass
Calcedonia is both one of the oldest and rarest types of glass. It was first developed on Murano during the mid-fifteenth century and is generally attributed to the master Angelo Barovier, whose firm was producing items in Calcedonia in 1460. For 500 years, the mystery of Calcedonia has fascinated the world. Items made in Calcedonia are among the most treasured holdings of the most famous museums. Although Antonia Neri devoted twelve full pages to the description of this glass in his 1612 treatise, "L'arte vetraia", the uncertainties and difficulties of its production were resolved only by the masters of Murano and lost with the fall of the Venetian Republic. The secret of the production of Calcedonia was finally rediscovered by Lorenza Radi in 1856, but lost again by the turn of the 20th century. In 1977, the master Loredano Rosin, working with his brother Dino Rosin and their assistant Louis Sclafani, again achieved the miracle of Calcedonia, using the ancient and historical glass to produce hand made sculpture of modern style and design.
Calcedonia, as its name implies, is a type of glass that echoes the multicolored striations of the zoned agate. Unlike many types of glass that imitate semiprecious stones, it is not created by mixing together two or more colors of glass. The colors, shades and markings of the mysterious Calcedonia result from a chemical process intrinsic to each batch of glass; a reaction based on the effect of the metal silver on the other minerals and substances used to make glass. Each pot of Calcedonia requires two kilos of silver nitrate to achieve the subtle beauty characteristic of this glass. Even today, the production of Calcedonia is an expensive and unpredictable process, more akin to alchemy than chemistry.
While the action of silver on the other materials generally results in a blend of colors - browns, greens, and a hint of blue - the exact shades and degree of striation cannot be controlled and vary from item to item. Each piece is a unique work of art combining an ancient technical process with the best of modern craftsmanship.1977, the Maestro Loredano Rosin, working with his brother Dino Rosin, again achieved the miracle of Calcedonia, and used the ancient and historical glass to create hand made sculpture of modern and romantic design. The Striations of color are achieved by adding about 4 1/2 pounds (1 Kilo) of silver nitrate to each batch of Calcedonia glass. The exact shades and degree of striation can not be controlled and creates the unpredictable beauty of each piece.
NOTE: Similar Calcedonia pieces by Dino Rosin sell for thousands of dollars. See a few at http://www.taboragallery.com/OggettiGlass.html
This is a PERFECT piece of art. Simply stunning and unbelievable work - this piece is a winner!

About Maestro Andrea Tagliapietra
Andrea Tagliapietra was born in Murano on February 17, 1955. At the age of 14 he started working the glass in a glass factory in Murano island, following the tradition of his father Erminio, at that time one of the most talented glass masters at Salviati & C. Since he was a boy he worked hard as a glass factory servant and attendant and finally became a glass master in 1979.
In 1980 he began a collaboration with the master Renato Anatrà, under the brand “Arte 80”. In this period, as he loves to assert, he “lit up” his sensitiveness and art and started creating pieces that became popular and successful, as years went by, thanks to their particular expressive autonomy and style, their formal and chromatic balance that were absolutely comparable to those of the greater glass masters of the first half of the twentieth century.
In the early nineties he stopped the collaboration with Renato Antrà and continued his production working autonomously. His specialty is lump glass sculpture (sculpture on whole bodies of glass).
In order to better understand Andrea Tagliapietra’s artistic path, the peculiarity of his working methodology and of his approach to a difficult and complex material as glass is, we need to go back to his ideal “initiator”, the glass master Ermanno Nason. Ermanno Nason was a Picasso interpreter and indefatigable experimenter of noble but extreme forms, as well as chemical and chromatic revolutionary combinations. Andrea was able to get precious secrets and suggestions which have definitely made him one of most important avant-garde sculpture masters of the new generation.
He started exposing in 1983. A delicate Motherhood was exposed at “Bevilacqua la Masa Foundation” in Venice, where some of the greatest contemporary art masters took their first steps in the artistic field. For Andrea Tagliapietra it was the beginning of an exhibition path, that took him to Vienna, Linz, Villach, Las Vegas and the prestigious Gallery of Sculpture in Palm Beach, to New York, Chicago, Bern and Tokyo, where a lot of his sculptures are now part of private collections.
There is a permanent collection at: Studio Andrea Tagliapietra Viale Bressagio 25/a, Murano (Venice)
