Extraordinary museum quality 18th century Wedgwood Jasper ware buckle. Two plaques of deep blue and white porcelain set in magnificent Boulton steel frames. The left plaque features Greek Goddesses Athena & Hera shooting bows and arrows. The right plaque features THE THREE GRACES; all daughters of Zeus. Aglaia the Radiant, Euphrosyna The Joyful and Thalia the Flowering dancing. Both of these are famous Greek scenes well known in the 18th century when this buckle was made. The piece is circa 1770's. Marked on the reverse WEDGWOOD incised into the white porcelain. The frame is not marked but is undoubtedly Boulton steel. It is extraordinary with graduated steel beading on all four sides. The square frame is finished at each corner with the fancy 'claw' holding the plaque in place. Each porcelain plaque measures 1 & 1/4" square. When the buckle is joined it measures 3" end to end by 1 1/2" top to bottom of the beads. The color of the blue appears a bit lighter than the actual piece. It is a gorgeous medium blue in hand. The cameo has unbelievable detail. This extraordinary piece of history is in very fine condition. There are no issues; no cracks, faults, rust or other blemishes. It has been lovingly maintained for more than 225 years. More photographs upon request. This piece will be shipped upon receipt of payment via PayPal only.
