Publisher's Note
One of our finest writers on one of her greatest loves.
Jamaica Kincaid's first garden in Vermont was a plot in the middle of her front lawn. There, to the consternation of more experienced friends, she planted only seeds of the flowers she liked best. In My Garden (Book): she gathers all she loves about gardening and plants, and examines it generously, passionately, and with sharp, idiosyncratic discrimination.
Kincaid's affections are matched in intensity only by her dislikes. She loves spring and summer but cannot bring herself to love winter, for it hides the garden. She adores the rhododendron Jane Grant, and appreciates ordinary Blue Lake string beans, but abhors the Asiatic lily. The sources of her inspiration -- seed catalogues, the gardener Gertrude Jekyll, gardens like Monet's at Giverny -- are subjected to intense scrutiny. She also examines the idea of the garden on Antigua, where she grew up. My Garden (Book): is an intimate, playful, and penetrating book on gardens, the plants that fill them, and the persons who tend them.

Industry reviews
"[A]n unexpected treat, something akin to discovering a patch of Fritillaria persica in spring you'd forgotten you'd planted in fall."
Del Negro

"Jamaica Kincaid's book takes its place in an agreeable tradition of garden literature, in which the personality and general concerns of the author are of just as much interest as what is actually being said about gardening."
Fenton

"Kinkaid is...the most personal of garden writers. But intimacy is a convention, like any other literary illusion, and it's produced in MY GARDEN (BOOK) by moments of opportune frankness, by a genuine sense of wonder and by elaborately simple, repetitive and at times maddening prose."
New York Times Book Review - Verlyn Klinkenborg (12/05/1999)

"This is not a how-to volume, but rather a series of meditations on the joys and frustrations of gardening. It is a book for anyone who loves looking at plants and gardens--a breed, Kincaid reminds us, who are often not the same as gardeners. Connoisseurs of delectable prose will find much to savor here, though a few of the pieces do not fully crystallize....[It is] Kincaid's most companionable book--the work of a writer to whom we gladly give our ear, the way we listen to friends whose wisdom is all the more appealing for the gentle way they deliver it."
Salon - Jaime Manrique (12/20/1999)

"Based on this description of Jamaica Kincaid's gardening life, we can imagine the Antigua-born writer at home in Vermont, hands on her hips, scowling at Asiatic lilies, which she hates. In these strong opinions she resembles that British mother of garden writing, Gertrude Jeckyll. In her fascination with seeds and varieties and her cabin-fever musings during the winter months on what to plant, she resembles Jeckyll's American counterpart, Katherine White. But Kincaid's inspirations, motivations and disappointments in the garden are entirely her own."
Los Angeles Times - Susan Salter Reynolds (12/21/1999)
