Here’s your chance to own an N scale model railroad layout featuring smooth, reliable running, and excellent scenery. It also offers interesting prototypical operation with an integrated staging yard and two “modeled” railroads crossing at grade and interchanging in the scenicked area of the railroad. Or, for those days when you just want to kick back and railfan by letting the trains run you can do that as well. This N gauge train layout, the Androscoggin Central, is featured in the book, N Scale Railroading, An Introduction to the Hobby, Second Edition by Marty McGuirk. This is the actual railroad built for the book and pictured on the cover. Room needed in the basement workshop for future projects means this one-of-a-kind railroad will go to the successful bidder who meets or exceeds the reserve price.
Layout is sold strictly AS IS Some key facts about this one-of-a-kind model railroad: Size: Approximately 4’-0” x 8’-0” overall Buyer must pickup railroad at its current location in Northern Virginia (Washington DC) area. Shipping is NOT an option. Included: 1. All track, scenery materials, and structures. 2. DCC control system (Digitrax Super Chief with additional UT-1 throttle) 3. A signed copy of the book, with a certificate of authenticity stating this is the railroad featured in the book Does NOT include: 1. Cars, locomotives, or vehicles 2. Legs – The layout could be supported by cabinets, or on legs/saw horses. Some details: 1. Benchwork is ¾” birch plywood ripped to 3” widths. 2. Track in scenicked areas is Atlas code 55/no. 7 and no. 5 turnouts with the exception of one Peco curved cd 55 turnout. 3. Minimum radius: 12” 4. Pre-wired for NMRA Digital Command Control (can we run with a conventional power pack as well for testing or running non-decoder equipped engines) 5. Turnout throws (Blue Point manual throws) installed on three of the Atlas code 55 turnouts. The remainder of Atlas turnouts we've been throwing by hand without any problems. Peco's have spring throws. 6. A total of 14 structures including three scratchbuilt buildings, (Jake's Gas, and the old brick mill by the river) and kit-built models - Branchline DuBois Store, Walthers Paper Mill, Sunrise Feed Mill, Implement Dealer, and Freight Shed; American Model Builders Ellington Mercantile Building, City Classics Gas Station, Two Atlas houses. . The entire railroad has all basic scenery completed – with the exception of two or three sidings that need final ballasting and weathering. Also, some areas around the base of the paper mill and old brick mill needing additional ground texture added. This would make an excellent starting point for someone who wanted to build equipment, "tweak" scenery and add details, etc . . . It's also enjoyable to operate - and could easily be extended by making it a peninsula of a larger layout that extends around the walls.
