About Fair Trade and Hemp Our Hemp products are produced in Kathmandu, Nepal by working women's co-ops and small cottage industry producers. Weavers and members of these organizations receive a fair wage and retain control over the hours and working environment. These cooperatives have improved the quality of life by providing employment for socially and economically disadvantaged women. In Nepal, hemp grows wild in the Himalayan mountains and is harvested by hand. The hemp twine is then woven by hand on a traditional pit loom to create a unique, durable fabric. This fabric is cut and sewn to make the finished items. In the mountains of Nepal, hemp has been used for centuries because of its strength and durability. It is an indigenous plant which regenerates quickly after harvesting and requires little cultivation or mechanical processing. It is the ultimate environmentally friendly fabric. This naturally reheated hemp (cured in water and not chemicals), is frequently blended with recycled silk and/or recycled wool to create uniquely colorful, multi-dimensional products. Recycled Silk and Recycled Yarn products are made by gathering waste pieces of silk and wool thread from the cutting room floors of commercial producers in India. These scraps that would otherwise be burned or land-filled are then transported back to Nepal where they are re-spun and then sewn, knit or crocheted into scarves, shawls, hats, bags and gloves. What is Fair Trade? Fair trade is a system that not only aims to pay fair wages, but also to support participatory workplaces; ensure environmental sustainability; supply financial and technical support; respect cultural identity, offer public accountability, and educate consumers about the choices that they can make in their regular shopping habits. Fair trade businesses foster long-term and direct relationships with producers in the developing world, because they know these connections are a highly effective way to help producers help themselves. Fair trade is not about charity; it uses a fair system of exchange to empower producers and to create sustainable development. Hemp Facts
