This painting is of interest to children, parents, shepherds, Native Americans, spinners, weavers, knitters, animal lovers, family psychologists, dentists, pediatricians and, obviously, art lovers!! I painted "Close-Knit Family" from a photograph I'd taken of three of our Navajo-churro sheep, perfectly posed for a family portrait; daddy, our English blue ram named Cherokee Moon, nicknamed Rambo; mommy, a brindle ewe named Ebony or Ebbie; and baby, a mesa red male named Alfalfa after the character in the Little Rascals with the stubborn cowlick. Navajo-churro sheep are known for their colorful wool and for the desirable breed trait of 4 or 6 horns on the rams. In "Close-Knit Family", only two of Rambo's horns are seen, the two that curve downwards. The other two come out of the top of the head and go upwards.
I live in the high desert at the far north end of Los Angeles County.
My husband, Celtic artist Sherridan (Sam) Smith & I have dogs, chickens,geese, a llama & our flock of Navajo-churro sheep. Botanicals & animals are my favorite subjects to paint, so I never have to travel far to be inspired. Described as a Western artist, I draw my themes from a blending of country living and pop culture.
For "Close-Knit Family", I used acrylic paints and ink to produce the sheep images on heavy watercolor paper. The painting measures 11" X 14." With the included black wooden frame, the piece measures 13" X 16".
