NC-136 - 2sh 6d - PMG Gem 65EPQ - #1 Highest grade - Duck

NC-136 - Two Shillings Six Pence - PMG Gem 65 EPQ - North Carolina Colony -  - December 1771

Amazing - #1 Highest Grade.

The very Rare Duck vignette variation

There were two variations of this particular 2sh 6d denomination. It is the only denomination of the series to have two different variations. One vignette shows the image of a two story house, which is the more common of the two. While the rare variation shows the image of a duck.
None of the uncut sheets were found with the duck vignette. So when you look at the Census it must be understood that PMG has not yet separated the two variations but lists them together.

Absolute perfection -
It is hard to imagine a more perfect note. Fresh paper quality, excellent ink strike (notice the vignette of the duck is perfectly clear and full struck, which is rare), nicely centered with jumbo margins right and left. Signed with four deep and very clear signatures but obviously never saw circulation.
If you want he world's best specimen, here it is.

Some important history on this note:
There is very little known about this series (which is typical for North Carolina currency). Who was the printer? The engraver? This is not yet known to me but hopefully I can eventually track this down.

The vignette in lower left corner of front depicts a duck on the water. Numbering box is at top right. The ornamental engraving at left is fully clear and quite beautiful.

On the reverse I have noticed that on a few circulated (or redeemed notes?) from this series that you will find the name "I.ASHE" stamped in bold, black ink.
This particular specimen has a perfectly clear reverse.

This is a world class quality note, worthy of the finest collections.
