“HOUSE AT AUVERS”
1890
by
VINCENT VAN GOGH
1853 – 1890
Vincent Willem van Gogh was a Dutch Post-Impressionist artist. Some of his paintings are now among the world's best known, most popular and expensive works of art. Van Gogh spent his early adult life working for a firm of art dealers. After a brief spell as a teacher, he became a missionary worker in a very poor mining region. He did not embark upon a career as an artist until 1880. Initially, Van Gogh worked only with somber colors, until he encountered Impressionism and Neo-Impressionism in Paris. He incorporated their brighter colors and style of painting into a uniquely recognizable style, which was fully developed during the time he spent at Arles, France. He was a very prolific artist; producing more than 2,000 works, including around 900 paintings and 1,100 drawings and sketches, during the last ten years of his life. Most of his best-known works were produced in the final two years of his life, during which time he cut off part of his left ear following a breakdown in his friendship with Paul Gauguin. After this he suffered recurrent bouts of mental illness which led to his suicide on July 27, 1890, at the age of 37, when he walked into the fields and shot himself in the chest with a revolver. He did not realize that his wound was fatal, and returned to the Inn where he was staying, and died in his bed two days later. The central figure in Van Gogh's life was his brother Theo, who continually and selflessly provided financial support. Their lifelong friendship is documented in numerous letters they exchanged from August 1872 onwards. Van Gogh is a pioneer of what came to be known as Expressionism. He had an enormous influence on 20th century art, especially on the Fauves and German Expressionists.
His painting entitled “House at Auvers”, and the art print subject for this puzzle; was painted in 1890. It was one of Van Gogh’s last paintings, before he took his own life. The original painting is presently on display at the Athenaeum Art museum in Helsinki, Finland.
HEIRLOOM PUZZLE
The assembled puzzle measures 9-1/8" x 11" and consists of 309 interlocking pieces.
This puzzle was carefully hand cut, using premium quality (5 ply) 6mm. (1/4") imported Baltic Birch plywood and the highest quality Swiss made .007" blades available, in an interlocking "knobby" style cutting pattern.
The art print has been permanently bonded to the plywood base, using a top quality professional dry mounting press and premium grade (non acetic) adhesive tissue. It is my belief that this process for permanently bonding the art print to the wood base, is far superior to that of using aerosol can type spray, or brushed on, adhesives.
After the puzzle was cut; the backside and perimeter edges were carefully finished sanded, stained, and finished with a tung oil and varnish finish, that was then gently hand buffed to a very smooth, satiny luster.
The puzzle was then disassembled and carefully packaged, in a stained & finished wooden box that has a hinged lid, and retainer clasp.
The tight interlocking pieces of this puzzle allow it to be easily picked up and casually handled after assembly, without pieces coming loose or falling out.
Also included with this puzzle is a historical information sheet that provides a small picture of the puzzle, and a bit of information about the artist, and his painting.
HOW GOOD IS A HEIRLOOM PUZZLE?
It is my belief that the best answer to that question comes from those who have purchased and assembled one, so I much prefer to let customer Feedback answer that question, and welcome your having a look at mine.
This puzzle is not intended for small children, as the small pieces that it is comprised of, could be a choking hazard.
