This art form is called an Arpillera quilt, and has only been practiced in Peru in fairly recent times. Nonetheless, it is definitely authentic folk art native to that region. Various theories state that the skill migrated from Chile in the 1970's, or that it came from Europe with a nun or missionary. It is used to show everyday life, religious beliefs, and customs dating back centuries. In troubled eras, it has been used to form protest symbols. The Arpillera quilts have been used to alleviate homesickness when moving to the city slums from the rolling rural hills, to protest cruelties under the dictator Pinochet, or to express the overwhelming emotions of the artist during a time of turmoil. Each one takes many days to make, being created by an artist for whom it is likely the only source of income. The craft supports many children's educations and keeps alive the ancient traditions it shows in a fabric "painting." Many times the creator starts with a basic theme, but the finished piece unfolds with each stitch and swatch to become an original tapestry, never to be repeated. Ours comes ready to hang, but is also beautiful framed. This tapestry is museum-quality artwork, not just a souvenir. It is produced and signed by an artist who has created for many years and puts many hours into every piece. We purchase only through Fair Trade Federation members, thus ensuring that the native craftspeople are well compensated for their labor. Your purchase not only brightens your personal space, but enables otherwise impoverished individuals to keep their traditions and their families alive. Thank you for your help!
