Two years after his solo debut, Tom Verlaine came up with DREAMTIME, arguably the finest album of his career. It's crafted of the same sonic materials as the work of his previous band, Television. There are tensions at every turn--in his vocals, and especially in the guitars the duel over the relentless drums and loping bass. The opener, "There's a Reason" is a stunning tour de force of electric guitars that are towering pillars of sonic spirituality and fire.
The guitars are the star of the show on DREAMTIME, as has always been the case with Tom Verlaine's records. The riffs pile upon each other with poetic and mathematical beauty. There are grooves here that move the body as well as the mind, in effects alternately physical and cerebral. "The Blue Robe" is a dazzling piece of pure pop that's wedded to screaming high-octane guitars. This is an essential album for anyone who loves the power of the electric guitar.
