Here is a CHIKUSING Model Jinashi Style 1.9 shakuhachi made from Japanese Madake Bamboo I harvested in Kyushu in 2002. It is pitched well around C# for the experienced player.. Chikusing Model flutes are made specially for Zen Honkyoku music of the Dokyoku style in the way it was shown to me under Kinya Sogawa in Japan. This beautiful piece of madake has an oval shaped circumference with the front of the bamboo being on a higher edge. This is still very comfortable to hols as it has a gentle curve towards the front. It also has the proper node to finger hole relationship. This flute was started around 2004 and finished around 2005. I intended for it to be a modern bore Jiari but decided I liked the sound and feeling where it is now. The bore is completely smooth with not nodes showing. For me, it feels right in between a Jinashi and Jiari. Smooth yet raspy if pushed. It has a warm round tone that is not particularly loud but certainly penetrating when played well. All the advanced fingerings work into the third octave Ha notes on this fully functional shakuhachi instrument. Please know that most shakuhachi teachers in America will require a 1.8 length Modern Jiari shakuhachi to start lessons with. Kinya also studied shakuhachi music under Katsuya Yokoyama, who studied under Watazumi himself. My understanding of making and playing evolves daily. Instruments are usually shipped within 24 hours or sometimes 48 hours after notification of payment. Unless payment was made on Friday evening, then shipping is done on the following business day. All instruments are usually packed in USPS supplied boxes but I try to do my part in saving the Earth by recycling when I can.
