BASS SHAKUHACHI

Welcome to Yung Flutes Shakuhachi, home of Perry Yung, internationally recognized shakuhachi maker supported by both the American and Japanese governments to live and study traditional shakuhachi making and playing in Japan.

"Perry is one of the most creative shakuhachi makers I know. He has spent considerable time studying the basics of construction and his instruments rival some of the best in quality, but from there he takes the shakuhachi to new levels of freedom and, to our great delight, fun." - Chistopher Yohmei Blasdel, Kinko master, author of Shakuhachi: a Learning Manuel and The Single Tone - Tokyo, Japan

Hear the integrity of the tuning, response and organic timbre of this fully functional instrument. I am playing some Honkyoku phrases along with the scale.

Please read the entire description clearly. I try my best to represent my shakuhachi instruments accurately to help the informed buyer. Please ask any questions what so ever!

Here is a non root bass 2.9 shakuhachi. It is made from a dense piece of black bamboo, a Phyllostachys cousin of the Madake species that is use for traditional shakuhachi making in Japan. This is a long CHOUKAN bass flute made for the taller player. I like to think of these as HYBRID instruments as Black bamboo has thinner walls than Madake and sounds like a cross between the Jinashi Shakuhachi Chinese Xiao and The Turkish Ney. Jinashi flutes in Japan have lacquered bores and inlays at the blowing edge but not a fully plastered bore. This one started our as an all natural Hocchiku (no lacquer, no inlay, internal nodes showing) but ended up playing Honkyoku music so well that I decided to offer it as a higher grade instrument with my upgrades and my unique Spot Tuning Method that allows for a more fluid feeling instrument. Thsi fine instrument is pitched well in G for the experienced player. This is a smooth and dynamic playing instrument with a deep, resonant and vibratory tone color. It can go from a whisper to a scream in the right hands. All the advanced fingerings for for Dokyoku zen music in the way it was shown to me. An experienced player can sound very very similar to the Hocchiku flutes played by the famous Watazumi, the Komuso Monk who brought the experience of playing the highly refined Zen Honkyokyu music back to it's origins by playing on the most organic yet functional shakuhachi. I studied making Hocchiku under Kinya Sogawa who studied music under Katsuya Yokoyama, who studied under Watazumi himself. This instrument is carefully crafted with the awareness and respect to a traditional lineage. Please know that most shakuhachi teachers in America will require a 1.8 length Modern Jiari shakuhachi to start lessons with. If you are in New York City or the surrounding area, you can start studying traditional Honkyoku with me on this flute. Feel free contact me directly or see my store for availability. A flute like this one usually starts at $400 directly. You can visit my eBay store or my website at yungflutes for more instruments. The winner of this auction has my Lifetime Guarantee of customer support and the Best Guarantee in the World. Read about it below. Thanks for looking!

  • Recorded shakuhachi sound tracks for Internationally released films, Independent films and PBS documentaries.
  • Recipient of Japan - US Friendship Foundation and International House of Tokyo Artist Grant (National Endowment for the arts).
  • New York Council on the Arts
  • Ear to the Ground - Jerome Robbins Foundation Grant

In 2002, I received combined grants from both the Japanese and American governments to live in Japan to specifically study shakuhachi making. I studied crafting under Kinya Sogawa who was a live-in apprentice to Chikusen Tamai, the famous maker who apprenticed Hoshi Bonchiku, Yamaguchi Shugetsu, Tom Deaver and other professional Japanese makers today. Kinya also studied shakuhachi music under Katsuya Yokoyama, who studied under Watazumi himself. My understanding of making and playing evolves daily. I see that it will take a lifetime (or more) to master this wonderful and unique instrument. Visit my website at yungflutes for more information on shakuhachi flutes, playing, history, making, and repairs. If you bought a questionable shakuhachi, I will be glad to evaluate it for no charge. I specialize not only in making professional grade shakuhachi, but also repairing and restoring all levels of shakuhachi instruments. It is my extreme pleasure to serve the international shakuhachi community.
