Spring River in Winter

The Ozarks, with bright fall foliage, fishing in clear mountain lakes and rivers, little crime, and one of the lowest costs of living in the nation have long attracted people. The natural beauty of the region is enchanted by the fabulous four seasons. The mild climate and moderate weather makes it possible to enjoy the outdoors all year long. There is occasional snow in the winter which melts off quickly. The average winter temperature is 51 degrees F. The average summer temperature is 80 degrees F.

The Spring River has been described as the state's most dependable natural stream. The Spring River is a very popular, year-round float stream with numerous semi-challenging rapids, shoots, and waterfalls. Every hour, Mammoth Spring releases 9 million gallons of 58-62°F water. The constant flow from Mammoth Spring makes the Spring River a dependable year-round stream for floating, even in the summer months when most other rivers and creeks are too low.

Most Spring River canoe trips take place in the 17-mile stretch between Mammoth Spring State Park and Hardy, a historic town in northern Sharp County. This section is recommended for beginning to intermediate canoeists, and is very popular for family outings. The river is crystal-clear, with long pools and whitewater falls. The scenery is mostly hardwood forest with some rocky bluffs. Clear water, overhanging trees, and occasional wildlife make the Spring River a scenic float. The very construction of the river itself (a stairstep series of ledges and pools) makes it one of the most interesting and appealing in the state.

Mammoth Spring is Arkansas's largest spring and the second largest spring in the Ozark Mountains. A National Natural Landmark, the spring flows nine million gallons of water hourly. Forming a scenic 10-acre lake, it then flows south as the Spring River, a popular Ozark trout and float stream.

One attraction that should not be missed is Mammoth Spring State Park. In addition to viewing one of the largest springs in the country, visitors can hike, picnic, or even examine an exhibit of train memorabilia. The 1886 Frisco depot will take you back to the early 1900s. Just outside the train station is a Frisco caboose to tour also. Park visitors can even tour remnants of an old mill and hydroelectric plant that served until 1972.

Whitetail Deer in Arkansas

Big game hunting is popular in Arkansas. The state has a herd of whitetail deer, estimated at one million animals, plus black bear and elk. Liberal regulations for big game hunting seasons are set for archery, crossbow, muzzleloaders and modern guns. Harold Alexander/Spring River Wildlife Management Areas, consisting of 13,000 acres, is located approximately 6 miles south of Hardy, 4 miles north of Sitka, and 5 miles east of Highland in Sharp County.

The cool waters of the Spring River provide ideal conditions for stocking trout. The heart of the Spring's trout waters lies in the three-mile stretch below the dam. This portion of the river holds some of the larger trout. One- to three-pounders are fairly common in the shoals and pools down to Many Islands Camp, a private development located between Hardy and Mammoth Spring, and about two-and-one-half miles west of U.S. 63 (directional signs are present).
