[1950's]

The Vintage Atomic Movie Collection

Documentary Vintage Films of the Cold War Era.

The time is the 1950's and the United States and Russia are in a silent, deadly standoff of virtually vaporizing each other of the face of the Earth.

In response to the U.S. Citizens concerns of Nuclear Destruction the Civil Defense Department and the Department of Defense produces pacifier films to educate the public in reference to; how to protect oneself and family from the effects of an nuclear attack, how to maintain a clean house in order to minimize bomb damage effects, the medial aspects of radiation contamination, the inner workings of a nuclear blast, and much much more as seen below.

Films in the collection are;

About Fallout (1955)

Dispels many of the common myths and fallacies about radioactive fallout. This film drips Eisenhower; promoting a cozy, nuclear-war-isn't-so-bad approach, as opposed to the more frenetic drumbeat of the Truman years. As long as we "know the facts" and "act intelligently," the narrator assures us, we'll be able to weather any nuclear firestorm that blows our way. "The key to survival is adequate shelter," we are told. "The fallout shelter is the best defense. Without shelter, millions would face death." To ensure that we understand this, we are shown an animated map of the U.S. after its been hit with about 1000 nuclear warheads, all ground bursts, and we see a terrible cloud of resulting fallout that quickly covers the entire country. It's a bone-chilling graphic, but this is, after all, a motivational movie.

Atomic Alert (Elementary version) (1951)

Frightening civil defense procedure film aimed at Cold War-era elementary school students.

A Day Called X (1957)

Dramatized atomic evacuation of Portland, Oregon. With narrated by Glen Ford, premired on CBS television station. This surreal drama flashed an attack is not taking place when it aired to prevent public panic as seen in "War of the Worlds" Broadcast.

Duck and Cover (1951)

Selected for the 2004 National Film Registry of "culturally, historically and aesthetically significant" motion pictures.

Famous Civil Defense film for children in which Bert the Turtle shows what to do in case of atomic attack.

House in the Middle, The (1954)

Atomic tests at the Nevada Proving Grounds (later the Nevada Test Site) show effects on well-kept homes, homes filled with trash and combustibles, and homes painted with reflective white paint. Asserts that cleanliness is an essential part of civil defense preparedness and that it increased survivability. Selected for the 2002 National Film Registry of "artistically, culturally, and socially significant" films.

Medical Aspects of Nuclear Radiation (1950)

Explains effects of radiation upon the human body, internal and external radiation hazards, and the relative gravity of the hazards of nuclear radiation, blast and heat. Contains animation of the human body as a factory, showing a cartoon of workers in different body departments.

News Magazine of the Screen: Atomic Energy (1950s)

Compilation of 1950s newsreel stories on atomic weapons testing, civil defense and nuclear energy.

Operation Cue (1964)

Operation Cue was the name given the Nevada test in 1955, Designed to explore the effects small Nuclear Weapons upon buildings, towers, and equipment of many kinds. Study of a nuclear test in 1955 at Nevada Test Site.

Points out the contrast between the Nevada test in 1955 and present nuclear devices.

Radiological Defense (1961)

Film on nuclear fallout and its potential for damage in the event of an attack on the United States.

Freakishly dramatic music. Picture of people going about their daily activity is occasionally colored red to illustrate contamination of radioactive fallout.

Survival Under Atomic Attack (1951)

Starts with explaining how the victims of the two nuclear explosions in Japan had little or no permant damage from radiation and all recovered in good time (obviously a small white lie), Also "Explains" the dangers of the atomic bomb, the effects of radiation and how to protect oneself if caught in the open or in the home.
