Title: Aphrodite
Size: 14 5/8 by 18 1/2 inches. Signed N. Turner lower right front, signed et dated 2008 on the reverse, title on reverse. Indian Ink on 180 gram paper from a novel titled "Le Char d'Aphrodite" (The Flesh of Aphrodite), by Max Meriel. The book's story is based on the life of Phryne, an woman who lived in ancient Greece and was famous for her beauty. It is said that while being tried for her life, she stood up in the courtroom and exposed her breasts, at which point the judges were so moved by her beauty that they set her free. The book was Illustrated by Georges Bronner. Editions (Published by) Jacques Dervyl, Collections of the Parthenon, Paris, France, copyright 1956. This is a rare, out of print book that Neal bought at an auction in Nice. He has used these four pages as a background for an original painting. The pages of the book were uncut by the printer, allowing Neal to take out four pages at a time and use them as one large sheet of paper. The paper itself it a heavy, cotton paper. The book is an obscure French novel, of which only 500 copies were made. This copy is number 122. This is an original, one of a kind work of art. The work is not sold with a frame.
