Naming of Old Ironsides
"The USS Constitution Engages HMS Guerrier August 19, 1812"
by J. Clary (Jim Clary)

The name of the Painting ( The Naming of Old Ironsides ) is engraved on the copper plaque, at the bottom of the frame and is a piece of original copper from bottom of the Constitution / Old Ironsides before she was refurbished the Constitution Museum, Boston, Mass. The copper was a gift to the artist Mr. Clary from the USS Constitution Historical Commission upon displaying this work for hundreds of thousands to view.
This magnificent painting has been displayed in Washington, D.C. and numerous other locations throughout the US. This ORIGINAL was lithographed by the artist and put into print about 1975 (1,000 signed and numbered lithos - see example below). It is far in a way one of the finest marine paintings ever created and truly a masterpiece of art as well as history! The expression of the artist is so well done, you can almost feel the cannon shot falling in the sea.
It was this battle during the War of 1812 in which the USS Constitution, under the command of Isaac Hull pursued and met broadside the Guerierre under the command of the French Admiral James D'Acres. "Old Ironsides" was coined after she took cannon shot after cannon shot without significant damage and eventually took the Guerierre, her Captian James D'Acres and his crew captured.
This wonderful painting is located in Birmingham, Michigan and may be shipped world-wide upon request.
