Nandina is a genus of just 1 species. Rather than being a bamboo, Nandina domestica is an evergreen shrub with alternate, pinnate leaves held on upright shoots that emanate from a central 'trunk' from mountain valleys in India, China and Japan. Nandina is grown for its elegant structure and leaf colour though in some climates it is regarded as an invasive weed. In its native habitat it can reach heights of around 2 metres and spreads itself by suckering.
Large plants have been growing in
the Carolinas for 100 or more years without any care. Bright berries of Nandina last from fall through spring.
Nandina grows 6 to 10 feet high and spreads 3 to 5 feet. The plant looks like bamboo in its lightly branched, canelike
stems and delicate, fine-textured foliage. The leaves are divided into many 1-
to 2- inch, pointed, oval leaflets, creating a lacy pattern. Young foliage is
pinkish, then turns to soft light green. The foliage is tinged red in winter,
especially in full sun and with some frost. The flowers appear in May to June
and are pinkish white. Each flower is ¼ to ½ inch across, appearing in loose,
erect, 6- to 12-inch clusters at the end of the branches. If plants are grouped,
shiny red berries, 1/3 inch in diameter, follow the flowers in September and
persist into and through the winter. Single plants seldom fruit heavily.
Origin: China, Japan
IDENTIFICATION: An erect, multi-stemmed bushy evergreen shrub, to 8 ft. tall, stems resembling a woody to fleshy bamboo, glossy pinnately- to bipinnately-compound leaves, green or reddish tinged, and white to pinkish flowers in terminal clusters. Pith bright yellow.
Abundant flowers in May – June, 4-10 inches long, pink in bud opening white to cream with yellow centers, deciduous petals, fragrant. Light green, spherical berry ripening to bright red, in September – December.
ECOLOGY: Shade tolerant and occurring under forest canopies and near forest edges. Commonly planted around old homes and escaped, with various cultivars of varying leaf colors. Colonizes by sprouts and spreads by animal-dispersed seeds. Seedlings are frequent near plantings. Some cultivars do not produce viable seeds.
Nandina is a moderate-growing shrub. It grows 12 to 24 inches per year, depending on conditions, including location, light, fertility and water. Nandina prefers moist, fertile soil, protected from harsh winds. Plant
Nandina in partial shade to full sun. The color of the foliage varies depending on the amount of sun the plant receives. Leaves assume a reddish tint in winter when grown in full sun. Nandina thrives on little attention, and rewards us with graceful leaves and bright red berries.
Nandina loses its leaves at 10 °F. Stems are damaged at 5 °F, but the plant usually recovers fast. Careful pruning must be practiced. It is best to thin out old stems every year or head back old canes at varying lengths to produce a dense plant. Renew neglected shrubs by removing 1/3 of the oldest canes in the spring of each year for three years.

Fall Color: Foliage is tinged red in winter, especially in full sun
and with some frost. This plant has attractive foliage and attractive fall colors.
Culture Notes: With bamboo-like stalks and delicate, fern-like foliage, Nandina is much-prized for its oriental effect and distinctive appearance. Adding to its appeal are large, erect panicles of creamy white flowers in spring followed by decorative bright red berries in fall and winter. Berries are eaten by a variety of birds and this can spread the plant to neighbors yards.
Nandina spreads slowly by underground stems, providing attractive clumps for entryways, containers, or as specimen plantings in a ground cover. They also add an accent to the front of a shrub border when planted in groups or clumps. Plant on 2 to 3 foot centers for a mass planting, farther for a more open effect.
Nandina in partial shade will exhibit richer-colored red fall foliage than if planted in the sun. Foliage diseases will be less in full sun. Although tolerant of drought once established, rich soil and ample moisture will produce a lusher,
better-looking plant. Plants survive with neglect, although regular
fertilization encourages growth and thicker plants.
Nandina
is a low maintenance shrub, requiring only one pruning each year to control
plant height, if needed. The tallest canes should be trimmed to the ground or to
different heights in early spring to reduce the size. This will provide for more
foliage toward the ground and promote a denser plant.
This plant is considered mostly allergy free and causes little or no allergy problems in most people.
Nandina can be used just about anywhere in the home landscape. Planted en masse, it makes a thick, attractive hedge that can grow up to about 6 feet tall. It can be used on either side of an entryway, where it casts intricate silhouettes from the entrance lights. It can be used alone as a specimen plant, or combined with other evergreens with contrasting leaf texture. The leaves and berries also makes excellent additions to cut flower arrangements, and the flower clusters can be dried for an attractive addition to dried flower arrangements. In the fall, the leaves turn beautiful colors, including bronze, red, pink, and orange, and in the winter, it provides color with it's opulent bright red berries.
