Nantucket Lightship Basket - Detailed scrimshaw carving

From our family's collection.  The detail of the Baleen Whale Carving on the lid is as "artistically exquisite" as it is detailed- magnificent & Rare! The entire Nantucket Basket, lid, handle and base, as well as the Whale on the lid, are guaranteed in 100% perfect condition and order.  Never used - or displayed- just perfect.

Purchased New Bedford, Mass.  August 2005 - Dated 2005 in bottom of basket along with another beautiful almost identical Nantucket.  Beautiful tight weaving in the traditional fashion with steam-bent swing handle.

The oval opening at the top of the basket is 6.5 x 8.25" -  the 7" high - 11.75" tall with the swing handle up.  Most of the Nantucket purse style baskets I have in my collection and the one I used this morning for church are almost this identical size.

Other photos in the Gallery above show the original Nantucket Light Ship as well as the last of Lightships (Nantucket) which guarded the North Shoals and lit the way for ships passing in the night or coming into harbour in foul weather and rough seas.

Also shown in the Gallery above is photos of another Classic Nantucket we are parting with as well as several Americas Cup team racing yachts.  As stewards of our planet, have not purchased any 20th Century ivory for any of our collections and are not selling any of our antique (pre 1900) pieces in the foreseeable future.  The intricate whale carving was done by using a very special material similar to a polymer or ivoryite (used by many scrimshanders), but is a much finer material and mirrors the characteristics of real whale ivory to a T.
