This adorable sterling silver pendant with its mirror-like polished finish is a perfect example of the skillful Hopi overlay process with its oxidized blackened background and clean, precise lines. Handcrafted by Hopi master silversmith Delfred (Sparky) Masawytewa, the pendant features a frog that represents springtime, renewal and fertility.

The Hopi overlay process involves using two layers of sterling silver which gives Hopi jewelry a distinguishing look. The bottom layer serves as the base or foundation for the artist’s creation. The second layer is the detailed design. The artist created this design by hand using small jeweler’s saws and chisels. This is a tedious process that requires a steady hand. The top layer is bonded to its foundation layer in a complex soldering process. The bottom layer is etched and oxidized to give it that characteristic blackened look that Hopi jewelry is known for. Hopi designs usually include cultural symbols that include animals, nature or clan symbols that are considered religious or secular in meaning. ~Kokopelli Traders~
