JEMEZ PUEBLO ART BY AWARD WINNING ARTIST: CAROL LORETTO

This eye catching, hand coiled, polychrome seed pot was created by award winning Native American Indian artist, Carol Loretto. The black on red Jemez Pueblo pottery measures approximately 2.25" width diameter at the widest point around x about 2.25" tall. The opening in the top measures 1.25" diameter and the base measures about 1" diameter. The artist gathers her clay on the grounds of the Jemez Pueblo of New Mexico and hand coils, hand paints, stone polishes and pit fires her pottery outdoors. Carol's hand coiled pots have excellent shape and symmetry and her redware polish is deep.  The graphics are crisp and solid with beautiful depth and contrast. This impressive collector's piece is intricately hand painted with fine attention to detail and is free from chips or cracks.

Carol Loretto signs her pottery C. G. Loretto. She was born in 1953 and has been an active Jemez potter since 1977 working with polished cream and black-on-redware jars, bowls and miniatures. Carol is considered to be one of the best in the polychrome genre. She was taught by her mother Nanette Loretto. Her sister, Geraldine Sandia, is also a highly acclaimed Jemez potter.  Carol's work has been published in American Indian Art Magazine (Spring,1990), Gregory Schaaf's "Southern Pueblo Pottery: 2000 Artist Biographies", Hayes & Blom's "Southwestern Pottery: Anasazi to Zuni", and Berger & Schiffer's book "Pueblo and Navajo Contemporary Pottery".
