Illustrated with numerous black-and-white line drawings and several photographs, this early out-of-print book provides a definitive study of Navajo Indian wooden doll figurines.

NAVAJO FIGURINES CALLED DOLLS by Roger E. Kelly, R.W. Lang, and Harry Walters, Museum of Navajo Ceremonial Arts, Inc., Santa Fe, NM, 1972.

This book contained two essays: Navaho Ritual Human Figurines: Form and Function by Roger E. Kelly, and The Remaking Rites of the Navaho: Causal Factors of Illness and its Nature, a supplemental essay by Lang and Walters. Here is a fascinating look at these unique artifacts, presented with tables showing discovery sites of figurines in archaeological digs and other tables dealing with comparative data. These papers and associated illustrations study the form and function of these wooden dolls including prayers used in association with dolls and their ceremonial significance. This text will appeal to the collector, historian, ethnologists and all students of traditional Native American culture.
