Ebay's new "search experience" called Best Match now decides for buyers what you will and won't see when you're perusing Native American jewelry. Ebay has decided that you would rather see cheap, mass produced jewelry (much of it foreign made and misrepresented as Native American) rather than high quality and/or unique items and intentionally disadvantages the very best items (if you use the Best Match search) by generally hiding the best items in the bottom half of the search pages so that you'll probably never see them. If you want to see the best quality Native American jewelry or any other category of item the way you used to, then you must customize you search setting to "Ending Soonest" which used to be the default search setting before ebay introduced "Best Match." "Best Match" definitely isn't best if you're a collector or a discerning buyer who prefers quality over junk. During one of my recent buying trips to Gallup, I happened to be in a trading post when a member of the King family arrived to sell King's Manassa turquoise stones. This mine is still a family operation from start to finish! Anyway, the trader was kind enough to let me stay and ask questions, and I learned more about King's Manassa turquoise than I'd ever known before about the mine and the turquoise it produces. As the trader was examining the tray of stones he brought in, Mr. King excused himself, went to his van, and brought in a small tray that contained some of the finest examples of King's Manassa turquoise I'd ever seen. This is the grade of Manassa turquoise that you see in the collecting guides but that hasn't been available in more than a decade. According to Mr. King, there simply is no more of this high grade of Manassa left in the mine.Yes, it's a little pricey because the quality is outstanding. Anyway, I was fortunate enough to be offered these breathtaking stones, and this is one of many old and valuable early King's Manassa turquoise pieces I had custom made by some of my favorite artists. The stunning ring features a gorgeous round King's Manassa turquoise stone set in an engraved deep shadowbox bezel. The stone measures ¾" in diameter and displays the superb green color characteristic of classic King's Manassa turquoise along with the golden and caramel brown matrix that makes these stones so appealing. The traditional Navajo shadowbox bezel itself is 1 and 1/16th" in diameter. It's mounted on a triple split shank that rejoins and tapers to a hair less than 1/8th" in width. The Manassa mine is an ancient mine dating back to the long ago vanished Anasazi peoples of the Four Corners region who mined it periodically and jealously guarded its exact location. When the Spanish settled Taos, New Mexico and and the San Luis Valley in Colorado, they learned of the existence of the mine but the exact location was kept only in oral traditions (translation from the original Spanish): "Of all the hills that dot the grass covered vistas east of Manassa, Colorado in the San Luis Valley, there is only one upon which a man can stand on a summer's evening and his shadow cast all the wau to the Rio Grande River, over a mile away. This is the hill that contains the turquoise." A couple of centuries later in 1890, the mining area was serendipitously re-discovered by gold prospector Israel King when he ran across an abandoned tunnel that contained ancient tools made from deer horns and stones that he believed were of an indication of an ancient gold mining operation. He mined several stones and had them assayed, buty unfortunately they yielded only a few dollars so be abandoned his effort keeping only a few of of the odd blue stones he'd found during his gold mining for his fireplace mantle. It wasn't until about ten years later when a friend noticed these stones and asked where he'd found such fine turquoise that King understood the magnitude of his find. He returned to mine the area until 1906 when the now nick named "Lick Skillet" mine closed until 1930 when King's grandson, Pete, re-opened it. Pete discovered the largest turquoise vein ever found in the late 1930s. Once again the mine closed this time for World War II and it lay largely dormant again until about 1980. It's been producing top quality blue and green turquoise ever since. The mine is located in extreme south central Colorado very near the New Mexico state line.
