Decades in the making, Archives, Vol. 1 is nothing short of a mammothly adventurous compilation, a Blu-ray Disc box set that is not only a stellar musical look at an esteemed artist's early days, but a dizzyingly thorough interactive collection of all things Neil Young from 1963-1972. NY fans have been salivating for this set's release since it was announced (in one way or another) in the late 1980s, but even though time has indeed faded away between announcement and delivery (even Warner/Reprise's official announcement of this BD collection has been altered and postponed a time or two), it's without any hesitation at all that this writer refers to Archives Vol. 1 as not only worth the wait, but also worth its weight in gold.
Neil says this on his official site as to what he attempted to create with this edition: "Here's how it works. It is an old and funky virtual filing cabinet that spans my musical career, from the very beginning into the future." And that's pretty much it. Cataloging the first decade of his career (further Archives editions have been promised, and should start popping up in the next year or two or twenty), Archives Vol. 1 offers a sensational opportunity to watch how Neil's talents and artistic directions ebbed and flowed as he jumped full-cannonball into the swimming pool of rock and roll.
Not all of it is classic Neil, but who gives a rip? The panoramic thrill of Archives is its life-blood, and it succeeds on literally every front. Neil has drawn accolades from techie nerds everywhere simply for his adherence to Blu-ray Disc as a format (you don't see anyone else releasing anything this expansive on BD), but NY's also savvy enough to know that it's not just about the technology: He and his team have concocted with Archives Vol. 1 an explosive synergy of geek-tastic BD navigation and deeply rich rock and roll that addresses one's inner gamer and inner hippie simultaneously (who would have thought?).
Neil finishes a special note on his website by saying this about Archives and its BD format: "[Blu-ray Disc] is truly remarkable. All my new projects will be available on Blu-ray. It is not going away. As time passes, you will see that Blu-ray is what you want for the utmost in quality, variety, and versatility. It is worth it to get into Blu-ray now. Don't say I didn't tell you."
Now let your buddy Mike take you through the Archives and prove to you why Neil couldn't be more correct.
