NEW ENGLAND FURNITURE AT WILLIAMSBURG by Barry A. Greenlaw, Virginia UP, Charlottesville, VA (The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation), 1974/1975, is one of the Williamsburg Decorative Arts Series, focusing on items exported over a two hundred year period from New England into the Southern U.S., especially Virginia, and which may be seen in the extensive holdings at Colonial Williamsburg’s “living history” museum.

In the catalogue, “the range of objects described and pictured…spans almost two hundred years of time and varies in quality from the most sophisticated examples of a given form to simple, rather standard items of little artistic merit. Unlike many museums, Colonial Williamsburg has always endeavored to obtain not only the best high-style productions of the major urban centers, but has also made a conscious effort to acquire simple, plain examples of furniture to furnish its several taverns, kitchens, laundries, and the bedrooms of the smaller houses. Thus in this catalog a magnificent block-front piece of Newport furniture may be seen in close proximity to a Windsor chair or a rather crude folding bed. Each of these objects is important in its own way as interpretive material, and to omit the less grand objects from the catalog would fail to convey the whole story….The collection is particularly strong in such categories as beds…Queen Anne-style chairs, small tables, desks, and Windsor chairs….The catalog is arranged alphabetically by general type and chronologically within each category. Such relatively minor forms as daybeds and sofas are placed under the more inclusive heading “couches.” Tables are divided by general type within the larger overall category. Windsor chairs, a specialized form of furniture, are grouped by themselves;…Each caption includes all of the basic information known about a given piece. A span of dates is used to indicate the earliest and latest possible date of production. Maximum dimensions of all pieces are given with the exception of chairs, where the width and depth are of the seat. This rare out-of-print book belongs in the permanent reference library of the collector, dealer, or historian of early American furniture.
