What does "Semi-Automatic" Mean? (This KAMA EV97 is Semi-Automatic.)
"Semi-Automatic" DOES NOT mean "fully-automatic". A Semi-automatic saw will power thru a cut using a hydraulic or air cylinder, sometimes even a reduction or screw drive. No "elbow grease" is required to make the cut. Saws with "gravity feed" using the weight of the saw head with a combination of springs and "gravity" feed cylinders are NOT considered semi-automatic.
"Semi-Automatic" saws DO NOT feed and measure the length of material to be cut. This would be "fully-automatic".
As a descriptive concerning almost any type of saw, the term "Semi-Automatic" mean that there is some sort of powered mechanism that feeds the blade (saw head) into the material to be cut, thus performing the cut.
Reasons to Purchase a Semi-Automatic Saw:
- Your operator will be able to make more cuts in less time, eliminates "saw elbow syndrome".
- Consistent feed reduces blade wear to allow more cuts per blade, reducing your cost per cut.
- It looks cool
A Word about QUALITY: (LOOK AT THE PICS !!)
This KAMA saw is a very high quality unit made in Italy. Please don't even bother comparing it to some of the other cheaper quality imports. It is imported by a fine company, Elderfield and Hall which can be found at kooltools.com. Parts and service are readily available. We are a stocking regional distributor for the KAMA saws and have been selling them for 12 years.
The net weight of the saw without the stand is 225 lbs. You could put this on casters and roll it around you shop as needed. The shipping weight on a pallet is 300 lbs.
The blades are bi-metal and you should use the 6'3" x 3/4" blades sold by the factory. They cost about $ 30.00 each, plus shipping. It is OK to use an aftermarket blade if you purchase the high quality bi-metal blades.
- Capacity is 6 3/4" round or square shapes at 90 degrees (straight cut)
- Capacity for rounds cut at 45 degrees is 4.93"
- Capacity for rounds cut at 60 degrees is 3.14" (Yes, this saw will miter at 60 degrees !!!)
- Capacity for rectangular shape at 45 degrees is 6.75" x 5.9"
The Saw Stand:
This saw will be shipped to you shrink wrapped on a pallet with the stand unassembled. This saw unit is packed tightly inside the stand and you will have to do some assembly.
Thinking about buying a "COLD SAW"?.....Read this first:
Caution, I'm about to express an opinion......I am NOT a fan of "Cold Saws". If you are not sure what a "cold saw" is, let me explain. Cold saws for cutting ferrous have a circular blade made out of high speed steel. At a demo or web video, they appear to cut VERY fast and leave an incredible finish. Most cold saws will miter 45 degrees. We, let me tell you.....the cutting conditions for a cold saw have to be perfect. A cold saw with a 14" diameter blade usually has a capacity to cut a 3" solid cross section, or a 4" pipe, tube, etc. The number of teeth in the cut is very important. If you change that cross section, then you should change the blade. So if you are cutting some pipe, then the blade is different about every other jump in size. If you are cutting angle iron then the blade is different every other jump in size and wall thickness. Cold saw blades cost on average $110.00. You can get then resharpened for about half that price, by the time you include shipping. Resharpened blades get dull after about 1/4th of the cuts of a new blade. So, my opinion is that cold saws ARE NOT GENERAL PURPOSE MACHINES. You cost per cut with a cold saw is AT LEAST 5 times the cost per cut would be on this KAMA EV996 Band Saw.
A cold saw as described above is usually about $3,000.00 more than this KAMA EV97. Also, the EV97 will give you a much larger cutting capacity of 6 3/4" at 90 degrees. At it cuts straight. And you can cut a wider range of material without having to go to a different pitch a blade. And you can quickly miter by swiveling the head.
Also, ferrous cold saws perform poorly when cutting stainless. Finally ferrous cold saw cut aluminum poorly with the HSS blades. And you really can't use the carbide tipped blades on a ferrous cold saw, because the blade speed is too slow.
The KAMA EV97 is MORE of a general pupose saw and will save you many $$$ in the long haul compare to a cold saw.
END OF OPINION....
Factory Text:
Why should you spend more money for our Italian designed and built Kama Bandsaw than an asian one
you can get for a few hundred dollars less? Three reasons:
1. You get accuracy that no other bandsaw in the world comes close to. In fact, a KAMA Bandsaw
gives you accuracy rivaling a coldsaw, for about half the money and a lot bigger capacity.
2. Ease of use. The head of our bandsaw pivots to miter, not the vise. You save valuable shop space
by setting up your machine against a wall instead of in the middle of the shop floor. No other
machine gives you this much cutting capacity in this small a package.
3. The machines are built to take constant, heavy, day in and day out use for years.
Listed below are photos and examples of what we mean by each of these three reasons. An investment
in a KAMA Bandsaw is not an expense, it is a proven money maker that will deliver years of profitable
use. In fact, if you think about it, as a percentage of the value of the products you will make, over the
life of our saw, the cost of a KAMA Bandsaw is so small, you can’t even measure it. Does it really make
sense to “save” a few hundred dollars on an asian machine, and go through the hassles of inaccurate
cutting, time consuming set up for mitering and running around looking for parts in a year or two?
We have designed and created this powerful KAMA bandsaw with exceptional and innovative technical
specifications that are unique to the market. Ongoing research, application and development are the
results of many years’ experience in the field that is confirmed by thousands of satisfied customers.
EV 996 and EV 97 KAMA Band saws come complete as shown with base, coolant system and control box,
ready to use. No hidden extras to buy. On arrival at your shop, only the base needs to be assembled.
You will be ready to start sawing in 15 minutes. The machines use standard, 3/4” x .035, bi metal
bandsaw blades, easy to find locally or you can buy them from us.
Our experience guarantees a range of KAMA band saws capable of satisfying all cutting requirements in
a fast, precise and completely safe manner.
