Tsunami TSU-1000 Digital Sound Decoder

The Tsunami TSU-1000 is SoundTraxx’s high-performance, onboard locomotive sound system. The TSU-1000 is a versatile 1 amp decoder integrating a full-featured sound system, four Hyperlight lighting effects, a motor controller and a DCC decoder into a single, integrated package and is compatible with the NMRA DCC standards and Recommended Practices.

The TSU-1000 is designed to fit a large variety of models in both steam and diesel, in a one-size-fits-all format. To keep the size down, only components available in highly miniaturized packages were selected for use in the Tsunami. The TSU-1000 measures 1.68” x 0.68” x 0.25”. Two removable wire harnesses provide connections for power, lights and speaker(s). The TSU-1000 is especially flexible for installation in older brass and pre DCC-ready models. An eight-pin NMRA connector can be wired to the power harness to essentially make it a ‘plug and play’ decoder.

Tsunami TSU-1000 can also be used on ‘Analog’ layouts and controlled with a conventional power pack, though it really shines on DCC controlled layouts.

Unlike other manufacturers who hide behind words like ‘CD Quality’ or ‘Co-Processor Technology’, Tsunami is truly a 16-bit digital sound system, the best available on the market. At Tsunami’s core is a true 32-bit Digital Signal Processor, or DSP, capable of executing over 120 million instructions per second. With this new level of performance, SoundTraxx was able to give Tsunami 14 functions, over 22 individual sounds, and 4 special effects including the ability to alter the exhaust sound automatically in response to changes in the engine load.

Steam decoders can produce over 22 sound effects, including the bell, whistle, airpump, dynamo, snifter valve, injectors, firebox blower, side rod clank, brake squeal, exhaust chuff and more. Pull up to the water tank and activate the Water Stop effect - a steam engine won't get far without water! Fireman Fred has a few new things up his sleeve as well, as he works to keep the locomotive in prime operating condition.

Use the Auto-Exhaust™ feature to adjust the exhaust cadence to correspond to a 2-cylinder, articulated or geared locomotive or use a cam if you prefer.

Diesel decoders can produce over 14 sound effects, including the engine startup and shutdown, engine prime mover through all eight notches, bell, airhorn, air compressor, dynamic brakes, radiator fans, brake squeal and more.

Tsunami goes several steps beyond ordinary sound generators. Tsunami is so powerful that it comes with four special effects processors - the Equalizer, Sound Mixer, Dynamic Digital Exhaust and Reverb. It's like having a complete sound studio at your fingertips!

Advanced Motor Control

SoundTraxx has designed our new Hyperdrive™ technology into the Tsunami TSU-1000, resulting in smooth and precise locomotive operation. The motor controller compromises nothing, and includes the use of high frequency PWM and load compensation. In addition to these features, Hyperdrive includes High Resolution Speed Steps and Torque Control, all designed to improve the running characteristics of your locomotive.

Brilliant Lighting Effects

Tsunami TSU-1000 decoders include four outputs for SoundTraxx' Hyperlight lighting effects, which reproduce the light patterns of many popular warning beacons in exacting detail. All Tsunami decoders provide “Rule 17” lighting control. Now you can independently turn on the headlight and backup light, as well as dim the lights for oncoming trains.
