Any collector looking at this listing will know immediately what a rare find this lens is! There are only about 70 known examples, making it one of the rarest F-mount Nikkors that has been sold to the public. This lens has the lowest serial number currently known to exist.

These lenses were huge news when they were released in 1976, the fastest 400mm lens that had ever been made! As such it is extremely likely that all ~70 examples saw heavy professional use and this lens is no exception. The lens functions perfectly but certainly shows signs of extensive use. Optics and Mechanics

Glass: Very Good. No haze, fungus, or cleaning marks. There are some scratches in the coating of the front element but nothing that shows up in photos.

Mechanics: Very Good. Focusing is smooth and trouble free. The aperture ring clicks from stop to stop but has more resistance than typical. The aperture blades are clean, oil-free, and snappy but show wear from use.

Lens Mount: Very Good. There is brassing visible on the lugs from use but no damage or problems with the mount. There is a close-up photograph of the mount in the photo section of this auction.

Cosmetics

Barrel: Fair. There are a lot of cosmetic marks in the barrel paint but I do not see any damage. The strap lugs show paint wear from use. Please examine the large and detailed photos carefully to see the exact condition of this lens.

Tripod Foot: Fair. There are marks in the paint from use. The tripod collar rotates freely and locks into place correctly. Also no problem with the threads in the tripod foot.

These lenses had no hood, either built in or removable. This is one of the differences from the later 400/3.5 AI and AI-S lenses.

USA: In my experience US Customs almost never charges duty on used lenses sent from Japan. Official duty is 2.6%. (I have sent well over 500 lenses to the USA and to my knowledge only one customer has been charged duty.)

Other Countries: Tax and duty rates vary from country to country. Please ask me if you have concerns, often I know roughly what you can expect. Of course I will do everything possible to make sure the lens passes smoothly through customs!
