About Karuta
Karuta is a Japanese traditional card matching game.
Karuta itself and the word of it ** are said to have come from Portugal around the 16th century,
when what is called "Namban Culture" (Western culture) flowered. ( ** Portuguese word "carta")
Before that , in the Heian era ( 8th to 12th century), there was an aristocratic style matching game
like "Kaiawase" (using shells). So, Karuta was a kind of mixing of the "Namban" & Japanese style.
Then, in the Edo era (17 century), when mass culture flowered, unlike ancient aristocratic style of
Kaiawase, Karuta became a popular card game for ordinary people, played not only for fun,
but for language & knowledge educations.
About this item
Each picture cards & language cards are used in pairs.
For instant, there is a picture card with Hiragana character " i "
( left in top row in 2nd picture), that is a pair with a reading card of
"Isoge Akakage Kasumi no Tani e ." ( Hurry up, Akakage, to the Kasumi Valley)
( left in top row in 3rd picture) because the sentence begins with " i ".
In a Karuta game, we have one person reading language sentence cards one by one,
and players search to get paired picture cards in whole scattered ones.
This is an ideal way to learn Hiragana or Katakana characters linking simple phrases
with picture images, that is why Karuta is considered an educational game toy.
