Real-life tragedy intrudes on the escapist world of pop music as NOW 8 ends up being dedicated to the late songbird Aaliyah (who perished in a plane crash on August 25th and is represented here by the sultry "Rock the Boat"). In addition, a portion of the album's proceeds are donated to a memorial fund in her name. Otherwise, this broad-reaching compilation rooted in the upper strata of late 2001's pop charts reaches into a number of musical camps for a wild and varied ride. NSYNC ("Pop"), Jessica Simpson ("A Little Bit"), Mandy Moore ("Crush"), and The Backstreet Boys ("More Than That") step up for the bubblegum set while skate-punks get feted by Sum 41 ("Fat Lip") and Blink-182 ("The Rock Show").
Proving a catchy sample is often at the heart of a good song, and towards that end, Destiny's Child ("Bootylicious") and Janet Jackson ("Someone To Call My Lover") end up sharing royalties with Stevie Nicks ("Edge Of Seventeen") and America ("Ventura Highway") respectively. Spicing up this stew a bit are the Wiseguys' commercial-turned-dance smash ("Start The Commotion"), Blur hip-hop side project Gorillaz ("Clint Eastwood"), Smash Mouth covering the Monkees ("I'm A Believer"), and U2 chiming in with yet another inspirational epic ("Walk On").
