John Dee (1527-1608), mathematician and astrologer, achieved a life-long reputation as a magician after introducing clever stage effects into a performance of one of Aristophanes' plays whilst he was at Cambridge. He was accused of practising sorcery against the life of Queen Mary but was acquitted by the Star Chamber. The book is based on the magical diaries and workbooks of this famous Elizabethan, best remembered for his connections with the occult, magic, astrology and sorcery: his manuscripts document the ceremonies that Dee performed with Edward Kelly, who gazing into a crystal stone claimed to see and hear the angels who wished to re-establish the true art of Magic which had been lost due to man's wickedness and ignorance.  This True magical art would bequeath superhuman powers upon its practitioners. Dee belonged to a small group which sought the philosopher's stone, and practised crystallomancy with Albert Laski. He also drew up hydrographical and geographical descriptions of newly discovered countries for Elizabeth I and made calculations for the adoption of the Gregorian calendar in England.  Dr. John Dee rejected the necessity of the church as an intermediary to God and carried this doctrine one step further , believing that holy revelations could only be obtained by practicing the magic of the ancient Hebrews.

The Key of Solomon, save for a cultailed and incomplete copy published in France in the seventeeth century, has never yet been printed, but has for centuries remained in Manuscript form inaccessible to all but the few fortunate scholars to whom the innermost recesses of the great libraries were open. The fountain-head and storehouse of Qabalistic Magic, and the origin of much of the ceremonial magic of Midieval times, the "Key" has been valued by Occult writers as a work of the highest authority.

As delivered by Abraham the Jew unto his Son Lamech. A GRIMOIRE of the Fifthteenth Century translated by S.L. MacGregor-Mathers from an Old and Rare French Manuscript in the Bibliotheque de l'Arsenal at Paris. This rare and unique manuscript, from which the present work is translated into English, was a French translation from the original Hebrew of Abraham the Jew. I know of no other existing copy or replica of this in the British Museum which has an enormous collection of manuscripts.

Abramelin is divided into three parts. The first part is the story of how Abraham, the ostensible author, came upon a man named Abramelin and this, his system of magick. Abraham spends plenty of time describing all of his endeavors, including having done magickal favors for a number of Emperors. He admonishes his son Lamech not to use this system for vain purposes. In the second part Abraham gives details of a ritual for invoking and communing with one's Holy Guardian Angel. This is the Great Work which Crowley mentions, and which he used as the basis for his Liber Seketh. In the third part, he gives a number of talismans, in the form of magic squares, which are used for various purposes, from scrying to changing the weather.  This book is the basis for some of the Golden Dawns teachings

The Grand Grimoire has been translated by Ms. Gretchen Rudy from the 1612 Italian edition, the primary source work for this grimoire. Secondary sources include the 1823 French edition. The Grand Grimoire was issued again in the later seventeenth century with its original title, Grand Grimoire. The original Italian edition also includes the first published example of the Black Hen, or Black Pullet and although extremely brief, it is the kernal which was later elaborated on in subsequent editions as Le Poule Noire.

The Grand Grimoire explains a system for entering into a pact with three Infernal Spirits, Lucifer, Ashtaroth & Beelzebuth, through the authority of the Prime Minister of Hell, Lucifuge Rofocale. In this, the demonology of the Grand Grimoire is unique; while some of the chief spirits are identical to those in Grimoirium Verum, and others to Lemegeton Clavicula Salomonis vel Regis, the Grand Grimoire stands alone in the literature of demonology with its central figure, Lucifuge Rofocale. The name 'Rofocale' appears to be an anagram for 'Focalor' of the Lemegeton, according to Elizabeth Butler in her Ritual Magic (1949) who goes on to tell us that "by introducing the name of Lucifuge the author has done a service to demonology for which it should be grateful." In his monumental work Of Black Magic & Of Pacts (1898), Arthur E. Waite states that the Grand Grimoire "must be regarded as the veritable Magnum Opus" and he goes on to say that that Eliphas Levi later adopted the personage of Lucifuge in his works.

This along with the Grimoirium Verum are considered to be two of the Greatest grimoires ever written by practitioners.

This is the first English translation of the 1839 Lille (Brussels) edition of "Treasure of the Old Man of the Pyramids", the classic grimoire of Talismanic Magic. The introduction by the original editors of the book, the Van Meulsten Brothers, has been included along with a new introduction by the translator of the work. The original French text is also included so readers can easily check any questionable passages while using the talismans recommended by the author of the book.
Originally composed in Arabic, the editors of the 1839 Lille edition state that "near the end of the last century, the only copy known in Europe was to be found in the library of one of the principle monasteries of Venice." This manuscript was later owned by a Mr. Tyeleton, who had twenty copies of it printed, which were gifted to sovereigns and close friends, notably Mr. Van-Stopel of Amsterdam, whose copy was used as the basis for the French edition.  Until now, the French grimoire La Chouette Noire was a virtually inaccessible text. The Black Screech Owl / The Treasure of the Old Man of the Pyramids is intimately related to the better known Le Dragon Rouge and Le Poule Noire. The translation is faithful to the original French edition of 1839. This grimoire features talismans or illustrations which have not been previously published in any English edition.

"Faust" begins with a Prologue in Heaven, in which Mephistopheles obtains permission from God to try to effect the ruin of the soul of Faust. The Lord is confident that Satan will fail and predicts the positive conclusion. The reader follows Faust's seduction of the virgin, Gretchen, and her ultimate death. When Part One ends, Faust is remorseful and dissatisfied. The Devil has promised to serve Faust in this world and Faust will "forfeit his soul" in the next world. The play introduces the reader to HELEN of TROY who symbolizes perfect beauty. Helen and Faust have a son, Euphorion. I will not spoil the end of whether the Devil loses or Faust or does God intervene. Goethe is the Shakespeare of GERMAN LITERATURE and "Faust" is his MASTERPIECE----an EXTREMELY Rare title. The book based on the legend of a man who sells his soul to the devil and deals with the man's sense of alienation and his need to come to terms with the world as it is.

Goethe's masterpiece and perhaps the greatest work in German literature, "Faust" has made the legendary German alchemist one of the central myths of the Western world. Here indeed is a monumental Faust, an audacious man boldly wagering with the devil, Mephistopheles, that no magic, sensuality, experience or knowledge can lead him to a moment he would wish to last forever. Here too we experience Goethe's characteristic humor, the excitement and eroticism of the witches' Walpurgis Night, and the moving emotion of Gretchen's tragic fate.  

"Mehistopheles the most Notorious of the spirits of evil, is closely identified with the exploits of Dr. Faust. Goethe defines Mehistopheles as "part of the power that still works for good while ever scheming ill." The Grimoire Mehistopheles in the secret archives of Magic contain the names and descriptions of all the elemental demons and the methods by which they may be controlled. Of Mehistopheles it is written that He is under the power of Jupiter and his Regent's name is Zadkiel, one of the throne Angels of the Holy Jehovah. He can be made to appear early on Wednesday mornings (Jupiter's day and hour) or late the same evening. He appears first as a fiery bear, but the lesser and more pleasing manifestation is as a little baldheaded man in a black cape. So the Mehistopheles of ceremonial magic rising out the invisible at the demands of the conjurer limps into view as a grotesque dwarf, but woe unto the unwarry magician who falls under the control of the diminutive creature. TRUE LIFE OF DR FAUSTUS ---------- A well known magician of the Middle Ages was Dr. Johannes Faustus, more commonly known as Dr. Faust. By a study of magical writings he was enabled to bind to his service an elemental who served him for many years in various capacities. Strange legends are told concerning the magical powers possessed by Dr. Faust. Upon one occasion, the philosopher, being in a particularly playful mood, threw his mantle over a number of eggs in a market woman's basket, causing them to hatch instantly. At another time, having fallen from a small boat, he was picked up and returned to his craft with his clothes still dry. He managed to gain power at various royal and ecclesiastical courts But like nearly all other magicians, Dr. Faust came at length to disaster; he was found one morning with a knife in his back, and it was commonly believed that his familiar spirit had murdered him. Although Goethe's Dr. Faust is generally regarded as a fictional character, this old magician actually lived during the sixteenth century. Dr. Faust wrote a book describing his experiences with spirits, a section of which survived from the abridged translation from the German of 1524 which was a book ordered destroyed. In it he describes his pacts with many elementals.
