OLD 1860/90S IROQUOIS NATIVE AMERICAN GLASS BEADED BAG

MATERIALS/MARKS:

Unmarked -Glass beads on a velour type fabric or maybe it is some kind of hide that is lined with maybe a linen like cloth. 1/2" of red cotton cloth frames the bag.

SIZE:

5-1/4" by 4-1/2" and rounded at the top and the bottom.

All handmade by most probably the Iroquois of the Great Lakes region this bag is magnificent. The beads that border the main picture and trim the bag are blue and white. The flowers were expertly done in two tone red, blue and tan. The beaded stylized flowers look like embossed beading. Both sides are beaded and are mirror images of the other. A slit under the front flap was used as the opening to the bag. Looking at the underneath of the flap you can see a silk like threading that was used for beading and possibly hand sewing.

The flaps measure 4-1/2" by 2-1/4". A strip of brown velour type fabric sealed the top of the bag at one time but has separated over time. It appears that there was possibly a strap of some sort that is now tattered and may have broken but is still attached to either side. The red cloth shows quite a bit of wear and on one side 3 sets of blue and white border beads are missing. We feel this is pretty much expected with a bag of this age that was almost certainly made for personal use and the bead work is just FANTASTIC!! This is a great early piece to add to your collection.

This lovely bag is in very good to excellent condition as it has not been restored or repaired but it has some wear as noted above.

GOOD. Object reflects good condition if it clearly maintains its original function and artistic intent, although having considerable wear, or repair but still maintains structural integrity. Restoration may be evident and and will be listed in the details.
FAIR. Object reflects fair condition if the state of preservation (i.e., wear and/or losses to decoration, pagination, design, paint, weave, etc.) is in tender state of preservation showing considerable wear and deterioration, but clearly indicates the general nature of its original appearance. May be in need of structural stabilization, conservation, restoration. WE TRY TO AVOID SELLING ANY ITEMS IN THIS CONDITION BUT IF WE DO, IT IS CLEARLY EXPLAINED IN THE DETAILS.
