Up for auction here is a great looking and very hard to come by, early work by New York , probably Hudson River School artist William S. Segar (1823-1887 American artist). The title of this wonderfully executed work is "Isola Bella" which is a remote island city in Italy. The location in itself is a location not painted much by American artists of the 19th century. This work is being sold in its original 19th century frame. The work is an oil painting on old, thin, white painted black board. The painting measures on its own 14 inches high by 20 inches across and with the frame 20 inches by 26 inches. The painting is signed by the artist "W.S. Segar" in the lower left corner The painting is also titled in the lower right and it is also titled in pencil on the back of the painting. The painting is going to need a very good cleaning. The surface is quite yellowed and there is some dark black dirt build up around the entire perimeter of the painting from dirt build up over the years. There is also a thin line of gold paint along the bottom center edge from a repainting of the frame a long time ago and a thin line of gold paint along the far right edge , again from repainting the frame a long time ago. There are a few small spots of paint crackle but the paint is well affixed to the board and the paint is not flaking. There is also a tiny paint chip in the extreme lower right corner. Once cleaned though the colors should be spectacular in the painting. We have included a picture taken under very bright light. As mentioned above the frame was originally a bright gold and as what was common with interior style of the early 1900s the bright gold was painted a dull gold color. The corners in the lower right and upper left have some shrinkage and small gap but the frame is well intact and the decoration is for the most part complete on all four corners. William S. Segar is listed in the major art research book Who Was Who in American Art. He was either active or influenced by the Hudson River School artists with the way the landscape is painted with its great panoramic view and light. Famous Hudson River School painter Sanford Robinson Gifford painted in this same location in the 1840s and it may have influenced William Segar's choosing of this location for this work. We found this painting at a local thrift / antique store. The painting is a bit smaller than the frame so the title and signature slipped underneath the frame boarder and was covered up for who knows how many years. This is a great looking painting by little known but early American artist. Good luck bidding. Shipping is $29.00 in the lower 48 United States.
