OLD ORDNANCE SURVEY MAP OF

ORKNEY

 KIRKWALL & STROMNESS 1902

SHEET 108.03

THE GODFREY EDITION

These reprint maps are a must for the family historian, genealogist and anyone interested in local history of Orkney, Kirkwall and Stromness and also if you plan to visit Orkney for a holiday.

This large scale plan  is quite unique.  It portrays the area in detail, showing the city in considerable detail. Here are individual houses and villas, alleyways and lanes, even the mooring posts at the harbour. Here in short, is the fascinationg minutiae that is the lifeblood of history. To accompany the map there is an essay on Kirkwall by W S Hewison, which explains how the city grew and developed over the years. Included are extracts from the Map of Stromness at the same time.  This picturesque seaport was at its busiest in the early 19 Century and in 1821 its population of 2,236 was actually larger than Kirkwalls. Whaling ships were crewed and supplied from the port, and the Hudsons Bay Company used it as a major watering base, at one time most of the company's men in Canada were Orcadians, mainly from Stromness.  These activities gradually declined and finally ended in 1914.  By the late 19 Century the fishing industry was growing and curing yards were built at Ness; by 1900 fishing boats had largely replaced commercial vessels.  The population in 1901 was just 1650 but on census night the herring fleet happened to be in the town boosting the official figure to 2450. So if you family were in the fishing trade are were missing on that night - have a look at the census.  Most traders in Stromness required access to the waterfront and this explains the remarkable layout of the town based on its mile long main street. Long narrow buildings or quoys extended back from the shore most with their own jetties.  As the town grew, houses, had to be built further back but access passages woud be left between the new and the old eventually these passages were joined up, forming the narrow main street shown on the map. It is a fascinating example of how an industry shaped a town vividly portrayed here. These maps will be of interest to schools, to Orcadians and to visitors alike.
