THIS IS THE OLDEST KYRIAZI CIGARETTE TIN I HAVE EVER SEEN AND MUCH OLDER THAN ANY PUBLISHED IN THE RESEARCH SINCE ALL OF THEM DATE TO POST 1897. THIS TIN PRE-DATES 1897 SINCE IT NEITHER HAS THE KYRIAZI TRADE MARK (SINCE IT WAS NOT EVEN OBTAINED YET UNTIL 1898) NOR DOES IT SHOW AN ILLUSTRATION OF THEIR FACTORY BUILT IN 1897. ALL KYRIAZI TINS POST 1897 MENTION THE WORD MANFUCATORY AND TYPICALLY SHOW AN ILLUSTRATION OF THEIR TWO STORY THREE BAYED FACADE FACTORY BUILT IN 1897, AND ALWAYS INCLUDES THEIR TRADE MARK SINCE 1898. I HAVE ONLY SEEN ONE OTHER OF THIS EXACT DESIGN TYPE SINCE IT WAS FOR SALE IN THE MARKET EARLY 2008; BUT IT IS IN INFERIOR CONDITION. BESIDES THAT EXAMPLE I HAVE NEITHER SEEN ANOTHER NOR AN EARLIER PRE-1895 SPECIMEN, EVEN WHEN I WAS LOOKING FOR ONE IN EGYPT. THIS EXTREMELY RARE AND PERHAPS EARLIEST KNOWN TIN (AT LEAST TO THE BEST OF MY KNOWLEDGE) PREDATES THE FACTORY AND COMES FROM THE GOLDEN AGE OF THE KYRIAZI TINS WHEN THEY HAD WON THEIR FIRST GOLD MEDALS AT EXHIBITIONS BEGINNING ABOUT 1893 : CHICAGO [1893]; DIPLOMA OF HONOR, ANTWERP 1894; BORDEAUX 1895; AMSTERDAM 1895. THE KYRIAZI FRERES CAME TO CAIRO, EGYPT, FROM ANATOLIA AS TOBACCONISTS. THEY WERE AMONGST THE THREE EARLIEST GREEK COMPETITORS OF NESTOR GIANACLIS WHO AT THAT TIME WAS THE MOST IMPORTANT AND LARGEST CIGARETTE MANUFACTURER IN ALL OF EGYPT AND WHO ESTABLISHED HIMSELF IN CAIRO FROM CONSTANTINOPLE IN 1868. THIS RARE ART NOUVEAU LITHOGRAPH DECORATING THE TIN IS INSPIRED BY THE 1871 OPERA "AIDA," BY GIUSEPPE VERDI, WHICH OPENED AT THE KHEDVIAL OPERA HOUSE THAT YEAR. THE GREEK TOBACCONISTS, THE KYRIAZI FRERES ESTABLISHED THEIR CIGARETTE SHOP IN 1873, TWO YEARS AFTER AIDA DEBUTED AT CAIRO, AND USED THIS ARTISTIC AND ROMANTIC THEME IN THEIR EARLIEST ADVERTISING THROUGHOUT THE 1920'S. THE ICONOGRAPHY OF THE LID PAINTING DEPICTS AN ELABORATE FELUCCA BELONGING TO THE KYRIAZI FRERES DECORATED WITH FLORAL FESTOONS SAILING DOWN THE NILE WITH THE PYRAMID OF KUFU VISIBLE IN THE BACKGROUND. ON THE FELUCCA A PARTY OF EIGHT PEOPLE; TWO OARSMEN, THREE FEMALE MUSICIANS AND A FEMALE VOCALIST HOLDING A PARASOL BLOWS SMOKE FROM HER CIGARETTE WHILE TWO PASHAS RECLINE ALSO SMOKING AND TALKING ON THEIR COUCHES BENEATH THE CANVAS AWNING. THIS IS AN ANTIQUE COLOR LITHOGRAPHIC ART PRINT TIN FROM CAIRO, EGYPT C. 1895 TO 1896. KYRIAZI FRERES 100 CIGARETTES ZENITH. THERE IS A SMALL DENT IN THE LID, AND THERE ARE A MYRIAD OF SMALL SCRATCHES BUT THESE ARE TYPICAL FOR THIS CLASS OF ITEM AND ARE WITHOUT SERIOUS DETRACTION FROM THE BEAUTY OF THIS RARE TIN BOX. THERE IS A BEAUTIFUL LITHOGRAPHIC COMPANY LOGO INSIDE THE LID DEPICTING THE AIDA-LIKE ODALISQUE BLOWING SMOKE IN THE FACE OF A LION. BELOW ARE NUMEROUS INSIGNIA OF AWARDS, THE MOST RECENT DATED 1895, THE APPARENT EARLIEST YEAR OF THIS TIN. VISIBLE TRACES OUTLINING THE TOBACCO STAMP SEAL ON THE LID DO NOT DETRACT FROM THE BEAUTY BUT ADD NOSTALGIA. THIS TIN IS IN MUTED COOL EARTHEN SHADES OF BLUE AND GREEN, YELLOW OCHER, CADMIUM YELLOW DEEP AND BLENDS IN DEEP RICH HUES OF CONTRASTING WARM RED WITH GILT OUTLINED CAPTIONS IN FRENCH AND ARABIC. AN EXCEPTIONAL PIECE FOR THE ASTUTE COLLECTOR AND CONNOISSEUR. THE CONDITION OF THIS TIN IS GOOD AND HAS THE FOLLOWING MINOR DEFECTS : SMALL DENT IN LID. INSIDE LID IS PARTIALLY OXIDIZED AND INTERIOR PRINT IS SLIGHTLY OBSCURED AS PER PHOTO. THE FIVE KYRIAZI BROTHERS ; IOANNIS, EFSTATHIOS, EPAMINONDAS, GEORGE AND DIMITRI ESTABLISHED A SHOP THAT MADE HAND ROLLED CIGARETTES USING THE FINEST IMPORTED TURKISH TOBACCO. THE LION ON THE INSIDE LID HOLDS A PACKAGE OF TWENTY OF THESE CIGARETTES BEING ONE OF THE EARLIEST REPRESENTATIONS OF THESE EARLY PACKS. THIS IS NOT THE SMALLER 40 CIGARETTE TIN SIZE, BUT 100 CIGARETTE SIZE AS PER LABEL. SEE PHOTOS.
