OLPC (One Laptop Per Child) XO Notebook Computer

This lightly used XO laptop is a truly amazing computer for kids.

Physically, the computer is ruggedly designed to handle just about any kind of abuse a kid can dish out, with heavy-duty construction, a spill-resistant keyboard, and flash memory rather than a hard drive.  The computer folds up into the size of a small, flat lunchbox, with its own built-in carrying handle.

The high-res screen is unique among laptops, and was designed with e-book usage in mind, with the ability to toggle between high-res color and an even higher-res black and white mode designed for outdoor use.  The screen can swivel around and fold into the shape of a tablet computer for easier e-book usage.  The Internet Archive has recently announced that it will be making 1.6 million e-books available, specifically formatted for the XO.

The XO software, called Sugar, was developed especially for kids, and runs on top of Linux.  Includes web browsing, a child-safe edited subset of the wikipedia, a simple word processor, a musical play environment (Tam Tam), programming games and tutorials, software to record photos, videos, and sounds with the built-in webcam and microphone, and much, much more.  And power users can drop down into linux and install a large number of linux-based applications that work great on the XO, including productivity apps such as email, chat, mp3 playing software, and multitrack recording, as well as many Linux games.

On top of all that, the XO comes with a powerful WiFi antenna, SD card slot, and USB ports for plugging in a thumbdrive, external mouse, or external keyboard.
