1930s GE/Telechron AB692 'Concord' Banjo Wall Clock

Banjo style clocks were very popular in the late 1920's and into the 1930's, and Telechron introduced their larger models in 1927. But at $50 to $100, these clocks were nearly out of reach for most Americans making only $22 per week. In 1931, Telechron created their first generation of "Mini-banjos". These were equally attractive clocks, only smaller, and sporting a more affordable price tag of under $20. The Concord was one of two clocks made. If you look at the video you will see how we received this clock - in pieces. The head was broken off and hanging by the power cord. There were some slight marks on the reverse paintings, the bezel had a small dimple in it, and there were a few spots of paint missing on the dial.

Since the 'Concord' is not a clock seen that often and it's age is almost 80 years, it made us sure we had to bring this clock back to life. This banjo features a scene of Paul Revere's ride from the North Church.

The movement was disassembled, each individual gear was cleaned and polished, then oiled and reassembled. We opened up the rotor, cleaned and rinsed it out, and filled it with synthetic oil made for the higher temperatures of electric clocks. The bezel was cleaned, buffed out, polished and lacquered - we did leave the small dimple. Hands, dial, glass, and reverse glass painted inserts were all cleaned. We also cleaned and polished the decorative brass eagle on top and the side brass decorations.

After we glued the case back together and cleaned all the dirt and smoke off of it, we hand rubbed it with several coats of natural tung oil finish. Some of the worn veneer can still be seen in a few places, but overall it looks great. We have adjusted the price for the few imperfections still remaining on the clock.
