| | Album notes | Smokey Robinson & The Miracles: Smokey Robinson, Bobby Rogers, Claudette Rogers, Warren Moore, Ronnie White (vocals). Producers include: Smokey Robinson, Al Clevelend, Warren Moore, Terry Johnson, Henry Crosby. Compilation producer: Harry Weinger. Recorded between 1959 & 1972. Includes liner notes by David Ritz. Smokey Robinson is one of the key figures not just in the development of the Motown sound, but in the maturation of R&B in the 1960s. To listen to the OOO BABY BABY collection's two discs is to follow that growth from the Miracles' post-doo-wop beginnings through to their soul/dance hits and on to indelible pop masterpieces. Nowhere can the jubilance of Smokey's early-'60s work be heard more clearly than on the joyous, happy-feet classic "Mickey's Monkey," the tune that launched a thousand dance steps. At the same time, the depths of heartbreak are plumbed with almost Shakespearean grace on torchy soul standard-bearers like "The Tracks of My Tears" and the title cut.

4 out of 5 - ...It's the perfect starter pack, tracing Smokey Robinson's role as soul music's most sensitive songwriter... Q (12/01/2002)
